Behind the Scenes of the Production of Our OTTO Upholstered Bed

Behind the Scenes of the Production of Our OTTO Upholstered Bed

"Indoor pollution, which can be 5 to 10 times higher than outdoor pollution, is raising growing concerns about the quality of our home environment."

In this context, choosing healthy and eco-friendly furniture becomes essential. That’s where the OTTO bed base comes in, offering you a sustainable alternative! Follow along to discover not only how this bed base was created, but also why.

The Importance of a Good Mattress Base

The Problem with So-Called “Standard” Upholstered Box Springs

In the bedding market, most upholstered box springs are filled and covered with polyester. But what exactly is polyester? Well, it’s a synthetic material derived from petroleum that accounts for about 70% of the synthetic fibers available on the market. The problem with this material lies in its production: according to the WWF, it takes 1.5 kg of petroleum to produce 1 kg of polyester.

But that’s not all—polyester continues to pollute even long after it’s been manufactured. Throughout its lifespan, this material releases plastic microplastics, polluting the oceans, seas, and rivers with every wash; but above all, it pollutes by releasing VOCs (Volatile Organic Compounds) into your bedroom.

Next, we noticed a problem specific to box springs: slats covered in polyester. These slats don’t allow much airflow and can damage your mattress, affecting your nights and your sleep.

And that’s exactly the problem. The comfort of your mattress goes hand in hand with a suitable box spring. If the slats of your box spring are covered in polyester, they are—as you read above—less breathable. This affects the quality of your sleep, increasing feelings of heat and the presence of pests such as dust mites and other unpleasant creatures.

A solution that appeals to everyone

Faced with this concerning situation, we are taking the initiative to transform industry standards with a more environmentally friendly option: the Kipli Upholstered Bed Base. Our goal, therefore, was to design a bed that is:

  • First and foremost, it's durable, so you can keep it for a long time.
  • Next, we wanted it to be natural—that is, free of polyester or other chemical treatments.
  • And finally, all these features come together in an elegant design, so you'll never get tired of it.

In keeping with this commitment to responsibility, it was unthinkable that our OTTO bed would be manufactured on the other side of the world, like the vast majority of beds. To ensure responsible manufacturing, it had to be crafted by skilled, fairly compensated workers located near us.

Our goal: to offer you a sustainable alternative with the OTTO bed frame

The Choice of Materials and Their Benefits

To achieve and bring to life this goal of eliminating polyester, we chose a cover made entirely of linen from Lemaitre Demeestere, one of France’s oldest weavers. These French weavers preserve and celebrate their ancestral craftsmanship to ensure their fabrics offer exceptional quality and durability.

Driven by a commitment to eco-friendly production, their fabrics are “Masters of Linen” certified, and their fibers come from northern France and Normandy to ensure local production. Linen is a durable, lightweight, and supple material that is easy to grow and requires very little water. Most importantly, it has no negative impact on your health or the surrounding biodiversity, and it undergoes no chemical treatment.

To create this cladding, we chose to build a structure using PEFC-certified French poplar —meaning the wood comes from sustainably managed forests. It is also CARB-certified and combined with solid beech slats. These solid woods are durable and safe for your health because they are not treated with chemicals or adhesives.

The design of this bed frame

The choice of these materials is also central to the essence of this upholstered bed, as we wanted to create the centerpiece of your bedroom through the elegance of linen and its timeless design.

This elegance had to be paired with unparalleled comfort, so we chose rigid, uncovered slats to provide you with optimal support throughout the night, enhance your bed’s breathability, and prevent the buildup of dust mites or the feeling of heat that wakes you up during the night.
