In the bedding market, most of the beds and bed frames you’ll find are often made from melamine-coated wood. But do you really know what that is, and how it can affect your sleep?
Melamine-faced wood is actually a panel made from a resin. This melamine resin is a type of molecule that can be transformed into plastic through a chemical reaction. It is applied to a panel made of small wood particles and a decorative sheet. When these three layers are combined, the result is a melamine-faced panel, which is essentially a plastic panel.
And that's exactly the problem.
First, from a health perspective, because this type of plastic releases what are known as VOCs (volatile organic compounds), which are toxic and may even be carcinogenic to us.
Next, from a purely functional standpoint. Laminate isn’t known for being durable—in fact, quite the opposite. It isn’t resistant to impacts, temperature changes, or changes in the environment. This makes it difficult to keep it in good condition if you move; otherwise, you’d have to upcycle it, but more often than not, these items are thrown away and not recycled.
And finally, from an environmental standpoint, it’s a bit of a disaster. To make melamine-faced particleboard, you have to use corrosive chemicalsthat harm the environment, as well as toxic adhesives that pollute your home.
But then another issue arose: the design of so-called “standard” storage beds isn’t actually all that practical. Sometimes they lack a bottom panel, leaving all your personal belongings exposed to dust because they sit directly on the floor. And when it comes to using the storage compartment itself, the opening mechanisms are often of poor quality—they’re difficult to open and sometimes make an unpleasant noise every time they’re opened and closed.
A solution that everyone can agree on
In light of this concerning situation, we at Kipli are taking the initiative to transform industry standards with our solid wood bed base. Our goal was to offer you a more environmentally friendly option. So we designed a storage bed that is:
