Enjoy the benefits of an electric bed with the right mattress

Electric beds, traditionally used in hospitals, are becoming increasingly popular among home users. Why? Because they allow you to adjust the bed to your needs: the foot section can be raised to improve blood circulation, and the backrest can be tilted to create a position that’s somewhere between lying down and reclining—perfect for reading or watching TV, and more. An electric bed promotes relaxation and well-being.

Prices are becoming more affordable, and electric beds are becoming more common in homes. But buying an electric bed in no way diminishes the close connection between the mattress and its box spring, because it is by combining their respective qualities that the bedding system comes together to provide optimal comfort and restful sleep.

However, due to the specific design of the electric bed's motor system, not just any mattress can be used with it. Let's find out which mattress to choose for an electric bed.

How an Electric Bed Works and Its Unique Features

An electric bed, also known asa"lift-up bed," should not be confused with a medical bed, which can only be prescribed by a healthcare professional to ensure patient comfort during home healthcare.

When used by individuals, electric beds are often intended for comfort and relaxation, as they allow the mattress to be adjusted to suit one’s needs. Features vary from one product to another; some electric bed bases allow you to adjust up to five parts of the mattress (feet, legs, hips, head, and back). An electric bed is essentially a custom-made bed that enhances sleeping comfort for a good night’s sleep, thanks to:

  • easier breathing, which can have beneficial effects on snoring, asthma, or sleep apnea by improving the position of the head and throat through the incline of the upper body;
  • reducing the sensation of heavy or restless legs through improved blood circulation;
  • reducing the risk of vagal syncope (dizziness upon waking), as the adjustable bed frame allows you to sit up gradually;
  • relief from back pain thanks to improved spinal alignment;
  • etc.

The motorized mechanism of the bed base explains why not all mattresses are suitable for an electric bed base, since the mattress must be flexible enough to be raised. Regardless of the technology used in the electric bed base, a pocket-spring mattress is therefore automatically ruled out as a possible option, since the presence of springs does not provide the mattress with the necessary flexibility (which would also shorten the mattress’s lifespan).

In addition, the type of electric bed base also determines which mattress is compatible. There are two types of electric bed bases: slatted bases and stud bases.

Choosing a Mattress for an Electric Slatted Bed

An electric slatted bed base isn’t much different from a traditional slatted bed base, except that it’s motorized. A slatted bed frame consists of a frame to which wooden slats are attached; the width of the slats and the spacing between them vary depending on the model. These are the best-selling bed frames in France. In addition, this type of bed frame promotes better ventilation of the bedding and provides a firmer sleeping surface.

An electric slatted bed base works on the same principle. It can accommodate foam or latex mattresses. However, if you’re investing in an electric bed, it’s because you want to improve your sleeping comfort and sleep quality. That’s why we recommend choosing a natural latex mattress over a foam or synthetic latex mattress.

In fact, it is important to know that a foam mattress is made from petroleum-based products and, furthermore, contains substances that are potentially harmful to health due to the chemical treatments it undergoes (anti-mite, antibacterial, industrial dyes, etc.). Recent studies have shown that foam mattresses—and, to a lesser extent, mattresses made of synthetic materials (such as synthetic latex)—release significant amounts of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) through

Finally, foam mattresses also have the drawback of not promoting proper ventilation, even when placed on a slatted bed frame. Moisture is then trapped inside the mattress core, leading to health issues (bad odors, mold, the growth of bacteria and other harmful pests, such as bed bugs or dust mites) and discomfort (a “damp” feeling in the bed).

If you can't afford a natural latex mattress and would prefer a foam mattress, that's completely understandable. In that case, choose a CertiPUR-certified foam mattress whenever possible. This certification guarantees that the foam contains no chemicals and limits VOC emissions.

Choosing a Mattress for an Electric Pin-Base Bed

Unlike a slatted bed base, you may never have heard of a stud bed base.

The post-style bed base was long reserved for adjustable beds, or electric beds. But because of its many advantages, it is now available in a fixed version for use with traditional beds. A post-style bed base, whether electric or not, consists of a set of ball joints supporting flat posts made of flexible and highly durable synthetic rubber.

A pocket-spring mattress base offers excellent sleep quality thanks to its adjustable comfort levels based on the area of contact, since each spring acts independently. That’s why this type of mattress base is ideal for people who want separate sleeping surfaces without having to buy two single mattresses. Some box springs even feature springs equipped with a firmness slider that allows you to adjust the firmness in a specific area. But as with any solution, there are also drawbacks: the high price of a box spring with individual springs can be a deterrent to purchase, since this suspension system involves more complex —and therefore more expensive— technology.

The only mattress filling that is truly compatible with an electric slatted bed frame is latex—preferably natural latex—since foam mattresses are too dense. Latex is, in fact, the only material flexible enough (a natural quality of latex) to allow you to fully enjoy the benefits and adaptability of a slatted bed frame.

When it comes to ventilation, a stud-style bed base offers the same benefits as a slatted bed base. It provides optimal ventilation for bedding, especially when paired with a natural latex mattress —known not only for its breathability but also for its antibacterial and anti-dust mite properties—such as those from the Kipli brand .

It’s true that a high-quality mattress and an electric box spring come at a price. But the health, comfort, and well-being that restful sleep provides are priceless. Sleeping in a bed that isn’t suited to the sleeper’s body type (a mattress that’s too firm or not firm enough, poor ventilation in the bedding, a poor choice of pillow or bed base, bedding that’s past its useful life, etc.) or that’s simply harmful to health (VOCs from a foam mattress, for example) is not without consequences for the body. Poor-quality bedding can be the source of chronic pain or health problems.
