The Pros and Cons of Microfiber Sofas

The microfiber sofa is both practical and stylish. It offers a unparalleled smoothness and very easy to maintain. Whether you have a large family, pets, or frequent visitors, you need a sofa that can withstand wear and tear and is easy to clean. That said, this piece of furniture must be visually appealing, so that it will complement the other decorative elements in your living room perfectly.

Microfiber fabric: a soft and comfortable material

Microfiber fabric offers a highly sought-after peach-skin texture. It feels exceptionally pleasant to the touch and is incredibly soft. Microfiber is an innovative material made of fine synthetic fibers (100% polyester or a blend of polyester and polyurethane or cotton). It is tightly woven, preventing dust or stains from penetrating the fabric. As you can see, microfiber fabric is very durable.

Comfortable, cozy, water-resistant, and durable, microfiber sofas are a staple in many families’ daily lives. Whether slightly textured or short-pile, microfiber upholstery has the advantage of being particularly easy to care for. Less prone to stains than natural fabrics like velvet, wool, linen, or cotton, they’re especially well-suited if you have pets, children, or grandchildren.

From a design perspective, microfiber sofas come in all styles and are available in a wide range of colors. This gives you plenty of options for combining style, comfort, and practicality.

The Benefits of a Microfiber Sofa

Microfiber fabric is characterized by its very tight weave and its composition of very fine synthetic fibers. It offers exceptional durability thanks to its tightly knit structure. Unlike woven fabric, microfiber is nonwoven. As a result, its fibers are sturdy and water-resistant.

In addition, microfiber sofas are also very affordable. In fact, this type of sofa is often less expensive than a fabric or leather sofa, for example. Functional and practical for everyday use, it’s very easy to care for. Simply vacuum the seats and backrests regularly with a special attachment to ensure its longevity.

In short, the microfiber sofa:

  • is sustainable;
  • offers excellent value for the money;
  • is highly resistant to stains, abrasions, and physical damage;
  • is waterproof and very easy to care for;
  • feels very pleasant to the touch with its soft texture, similar to suede or velvet;
  • is available in a wide range of colors;
  • It keeps you warm in the winter but is breathable in the summer.

The Limitations of Microfiber Sofas

Despite these many advantages, however, it is important to note that microfiber is a synthetic material. Like all synthetic fabrics, it is made from petroleum. The production of these fibers generates significant CO2 emissions and inevitably has a harmful impact on the environment. Synthetic fibers are also highly polluting throughout their life cycle. Fabrics containing synthetic fibers release hundreds, even thousands, of plastic microparticles with every wash. These extremely fine microparticles are not filtered out by wastewater treatment plants and always end up in the oceans, where they cause significant damage to biodiversity.

Furthermore, microfiber is a potential allergen. It can cause allergic reactions in some people, such as rashes, redness, eczema, etc. Finally, synthetic fabrics are not very breathable and do a poor job of wicking away moisture.

For all these reasons, many people today are turning to natural and eco-friendly sofas. None of the problems mentioned earlier exist with natural sofas. Nevertheless, you still get the same level of comfort, beauty, and durability.

Cleaning a Microfiber Sofa

As you can see, one of the main advantages of microfiber fabric is that it prevents dust, pet hair, or even human hair from getting caught in the fabric. On a daily basis, all you need to do is run the vacuum over it to keep it from getting dirty. It’s best to use a brush attachment to avoid damaging your upholstery. Avoid using feather dusters as much as possible, as they may leave unsightly streaks.

To deep-clean a microfiber sofa and restore its colors, you can give it a more thorough cleaning once or twice a year. To do this, you can use a special microfiber cleaner or a more natural solution made from:

  • liquid detergent and lukewarm water;
  • Marseille soap and lukewarm water;
  • white vinegar and lukewarm water.

Apply your solution to a damp cloth, then gently wipe down your microfiber cover after first removing any dust. Next, rinse with a clean cloth. Avoid soaking the microfiber cover, however. Be sure to remove all traces of moisture after wiping it down using a dry washcloth or a hair dryer.

However, before you get started, take a few precautions. First, keep in mind that microfiber sofas don’t respond well to water, which can cause water marks. Also, if you want to remove a stain, you’ll need to clean the entire sofa. Whether you’re using natural or chemical products, always test them on an inconspicuous area of your furniture first to check how the fabric reacts. This is especially important for sofas in bright or dark colors.

Finally, rather than applying your cleaning product directly to your sofa, spray it onto a damp cloth or towel and use that to wipe down the sofa. If your microfiber sofa has removable covers, the process will be even easier, since you’ll simply need to wash the individual pieces in the washing machine using the appropriate cycle.

How to Choose a Microfiber Sofa?

There is a wide variety of microfiber sofas on the market today. You’ll have hundreds of models to choose from, featuring different styles, options, levels of comfort, and colors. All of these factors will help you find a sofa that perfectly meets your expectations.

To help you get a clearer picture, start by asking yourself about your preferences. Would you like a standard sofa, a corner sofa, or a sofa bed? What size would work best in your living room? What style do you want to bring to your living room? What colors would best complement the room’s existing decor? What level of comfort do you expect from your sofa?

Once you've answered all of these questions, you'll have a clearer idea of which model to choose so that it will enhance your living room while providing you with optimal comfort.
