Back pain, sleep disturbances and a poor start to the day are some of the consequences of a poor choice of bedding. Since the quality of sleep is important to be in good shape, both the bed base and the mattress should be chosen carefully. So how do you choose your ideal slatted bed base? If, like more and more French people, you prefer the slatted bed base, this guide is for you. It will give you all the criteria you need to take into account to choose the right natural wood bed for a restful sleep every night.

How to choose a slatted frame: the different types

There are two versions of this type of wooden bed base. The first is the classic version with visible slats, also divided into two categories. The second is the upholstered version. You need to know the difference between the two to know how to choose a slatted bed base:

The classic slatted frame

As mentioned above, this classic version is divided into two categories. First, there is the fixed bed base or the slatted bed base without suspension. This design offers a high degree of firmness that will satisfy anyone who suffers from back pain or who wants a firm bed. Not surprisingly, those looking for a little springiness will have to opt for a soft slatted bed base, as described below.

Then there is the hinged slat base or the flexible slat base. This bed base offers more flexibility than the previous ones. So it is preferable if you want a soft bed, if you sleep mainly on your side or if you have a small physique (don't hesitate to consult with our team via the chat, at the bottom right of the screen, if you want more precise advice :) )

The advantage of the open slatted base is the optimal ventilation. Your mattress will breathe well, significantly reducing the chance of dampness. It is also much easier to clean (the inside of the frame and the bars) with a damp cloth. These are two points that will particularly appeal to those who are prone to allergies, as well as those who suffer from joint pain or rheumatism.

The slatted bed also offers the possibility of having two independent beds. This means that both occupants can turn over at night without disturbing the other. However, if you move around a lot, the mattress may follow your movements with the bare wood providing less grip.

The box spring

You can also choose a slatted bed base in the "upholstered" version. The box spring is just the classic version of a bed base, but covered with a fabric called ticking. There is an upholstered version for most bed bases, and the slatted bed base is one of them. With the box spring, you can choose from three different models:

The classic model that stands on legs
The extra flat box spring, built into the wood of the bed
The scale model for better mattress support

The fabric-covered slatted base also has some interesting advantages. First, you can be sure of the stability of your mattress. The fabric has a much better grip, and even if you are restless while sleeping, the mattress stays in place. If you are aesthetically inclined, this is also a model that you will like.

This is also the right version for you if one of the things you value most is the longevity of your bedding. This is because the wood of the slat base and the mattress do not come into contact with each other thanks to the ticking, and this lack of contact protects both, allowing them to be used for longer.

The main weakness is ventilation. With fabric, the mattress will breathe less. It will also be a little harder to clean. Although it is possible to vacuum directly, dust and other particles cannot be completely removed. Therefore, this is a mattress base that people with atopic tendencies should definitely avoid.

How to choose a slatted base: the choice of wood

When choosing a hard or soft slatted bed base, the type of wood is often overlooked. Spruce, pine or beech are most often used to make the slats of a bed base. If you are looking for quality, choose beech, which will give your bedding flexibility and a very good lifespan. If you can afford it, the multilayer version of the bed base with beech is without a doubt the best. This version is simply the combination of several layers of beech wood, resulting in a superior product.

But spruce and pine are also popular, and this is due to their price, making them a more accessible organic bed base for some budgets. However, they are less resistant than beech. You can always opt for a hard or soft slatted pine or pine bed base if your budget won't let you do otherwise. On the other hand, avoid chipboard or fiberglass at all costs.
