On average, we spend 33% of our lives sleeping. The choice of our bed should therefore be made with due care and attention. The bed and its components, in combination with the mattress, allow us to improve our sleep and thus have a direct impact on our lives.
Choosing a bed base can be as complicated as choosing a mattress, since there are many models on the market. There are a large number of factors to consider, starting with size, materials, style and design and, of course, budget. We will try to cover the main concerns when choosing a bed base.

HOW DO YOU KNOW IF YOU NEED A BOX SPRING?

Indeed, this question needs to be asked. The first question that comes to mind is: do mattresses necessarily require a box spring?

The answer can in no way be categorical. The reason is that mattresses need a certain amount of support to keep them in good condition and to provide your body with sufficient firmness. There is nothing against putting your mattress on the floor, but a box spring or a platform can offer many advantages.

It is entirely possible to lay your mattress on the floor or install a slatted base directly on the floor and place your mattress on it, but most people choose to add a bed frame to the slatted base to increase the sleeping area. This makes it easier to get in and out of bed and also facilitates air circulation. The benefits of this are outlined in the next chapter.

When choosing a slatted base, you should pay particular attention to the support it will provide and the effect it will have on your mattress. You should also keep in mind that some mattresses have compatible bases. Before you start looking for a box spring for your new mattress, you should know that many companies today offer a box spring with the purchase of your mattress. These bases are chosen to typically work with your mattress.

For most households, the most common bed bases consist of a set of wooden slats as a platform. Other bed bases may have sprung bases. It is important to keep in mind that your need for a box spring type may vary depending on the nature of your mattress. In general, we recommend slats for the support they provide. Rigid slats offer more firmness, while flexible slats provide flexibility. Springs are not recommended, especially for latex or foam mattresses, because they can sag at the bottom. But we will go into more detail below.

WHAT TYPE OF BED BASE TO CHOOSE?

To know how to choose your bed base, you need to look at the different types of bed bases. This is indeed an essential point, because the bed base, in addition to the mattress, will have an impact on the quality of your sleep.

To choose the right base for your needs, you should consider the following characteristics: your height, your sleeping position and the degree of hardness or softness you desire.
Strong people, for example, should go for a stiffer bed base. This will provide more strength and firmness. To increase the firmness of the bed, you should opt for rigid slats. For more flexibility, flexible slats are more appropriate.

A. The slatted base.
There are many models of slatted bases. Slats are the most common form of support. They can be integrated into a bed frame, or act as a stand-alone, unframed support. Slatted bases are particularly recommended because they allow the mattress to breathe properly, unlike capped slatted bases, for example.

B. The traditional flexible slat base.

This is the most common slatted base. It is the model considered the most ""universal"" because it adapts to any type of mattress. It is a robust, comfortable and ergonomic slatted base. But the feature that makes it so successful is undoubtedly its excellent quality/price ratio. It offers a little more flexibility than the fixed slats we will present later.
It can be integrated into a simple, strong iron frame into which the multi-curved beech slats are slid. For more naturalness and charm, you can opt for a solid wood frame, such as the Picardie model.
The flexible slat bases are especially recommended for people who want a more flexible bed, and who have a lighter stature. They are also suitable for people who mainly sleep on their sides, so that the mattress can take the shape of the body and keep the spine as straight as possible.

C. The fixed slat base

Unlike the previous model, the fixed slat base offers great rigidity. It gives firmness to the bed. This is due to the thickness of the slats and the fact that they are not ""bent"", but straight and compact.
This is a slatted bed that is especially suitable for people who prefer to sleep on a rigid support, or who have an imposing stature. It is suitable for people who sleep primarily on their back or stomach, for optimal support.
It should be noted that most box springs, whether capped or not, have this type of slats.
The fixed slat base is compatible with all types of mattresses. Slats, flexible or inflexible, uncovered, are also particularly recommended for their ease of maintenance. The slats guarantee the breathability of the mattress, preventing the development of bacteria and dust mites.

D. The box spring
It is a wooden frame covered with a fabric called ticking. In short, the box spring is a classic box spring covered with a fabric. This fabric will improve the quality of the welcome and extend the life of the box spring and mattress.
You can choose from 3 categories.
First, there is the extra flat box spring that is built into the wood of the bed. Then there is the classic box spring that can be put on legs. Finally, there is the box spring with gutter that holds the mattress in place.
With this type of box spring, it will lose its ventilation quality. If you are still interested in a box spring, you should choose the slatted base or the box spring.

E. The box spring

Box springs should only be used with spring mattresses. If they are combined with a foam or latex mattress, this may accelerate the aging and wear of the mattress.
Like spring mattresses, these box springs can be of two types: bi-conical or pocket springs. The latter allow a better independence of bedding.
The main drawback of these mattress bases is the addition of synthetic foams to cover the springs. The textiles used are generally also synthetic.

F. The box spring

Choosing a box spring is, in most cases, associated with the choice of an electrically operated relaxation bed. Designed with multi-directional rubber wings made of flexible synthetic, it will adapt to all your movements. With independent pads, it will offer you a support point by point.
It is recommended for those who have lumbar problems, those who lie on their side and more generally to those who seek maximum comfort. People with atopic tendencies will particularly appreciate this model thanks to its very good ventilation.
It is an excellent base for memory foam or high resilience mattresses, but it is also a good base for latex mattresses.

G. The relaxation bed base

This type of box spring allows you to raise your head or feet, depending on your needs. It is ideal for those who have breathing problems or suffer from poor blood circulation. As for adjustment, you will find manual or electric ones.
Composed of a fixed frame, two box springs and two mattresses, it will give a total independence to the beds. This bed base is usually associated with a foam mattress (high resilience or memory foam), or ideally with a latex mattress.

HOW DO YOU CALCULATE THE NUMBER OF SLATS NEEDED FOR A BED BASE?

A slatted base has many geometric and spatial parameters that must be carefully studied to adapt to the different types of mattresses on the market. For example, slatted bases mainly involve the dimensions of the slats, the distance between the slats and their number, and the height of the base.

In turn, the slats are arranged differently depending on the type of bed. Their length can range from 70 to 90 cm, depending on the size of the bed. In general, the slats are 53×8 mm in size and are spaced at least 4 cm apart. This size ensures sufficient air circulation under the mattress, while still providing adequate support. However, some mattress types have requirements for the design of their box springs and platforms, including the distance between the slats. You should check with the manufacturer to see what specifications apply to your mattress.

Bed bases can have different spacing and slat sizes. These parameters depend mainly on the type of mattress and your own weight. According to experts, the more slats, the better the support for your body. To choose the right support for your bed, it is essential to take these two elements into account. The first step is to calculate how many slats you will need.
The slats are usually made of wood and are 53 millimeters wide and 8 millimeters high. The number of slats can vary from one bed base to another. It is preferable to get a slatted bed base with at least 13 slats, so that the space between the slats does not deform your mattress and you get the best possible support.

WHAT IS THE AVERAGE PRICE OF A BED BASE?

The first step in any purchase is to set a budget. Typically, you will pay between 500 and 1500 euros for a slatted bed without a mattress, with a cheap slatted bed costing 80 euros, while a more expensive slatted bed can cost more than 1000 euros. However, it is important to check the above points, because high prices do not always mean high quality.
Box springs, in turn, have different costs depending on their height. This price can vary between 300 and 800 euros. Of course, the price can be influenced by many factors, such as size, brand, material and additional features. It can also vary depending on the retailer and where you buy.

A. What determines the price of a bed base?

To get the best for your budget, and as mentioned above, the price of bed bases can vary depending on a range of factors.
First, size. Box springs come in all standard mattress sizes. A standard box spring will cost you as little as €80. If you already have a mattress, make sure you get exactly the same size for your box spring. Unsuitable sizes are uncomfortable and can damage your furniture because the weight is not distributed correctly.

Bed frames can come with a steel or wooden foundation. Steel foundations are light, easy to move and affordable. Wooden foundations, on the other hand, are slightly heavier and more expensive, but offer the best support and the most breathing room.

The profile of your box spring refers to the height at which it lifts your mattress off the ground. It's also a factor that can drive up the cost. A standard box spring measures about 25 inches in height, while low-profile options can measure between 8 and 12 inches. Keep in mind that mattresses have become much thicker in recent years for the sake of comfort features, so you'll need to factor this into the overall height so you don't feel like you're climbing a tree every time you want to lie down.

There are also different layouts of the bed base: you can get a standard bed base that consists of a single, solid platform of material, or you can get a divided bed base, with a partition in the middle. This is a fundamental difference that will also play into the price of the package. If you are planning to move or are just the type of person who changes decor often, a split bed base can be very useful. The only downside is that split frames are more expensive because they have hinges and moving parts.
Once you have a budget in mind, you can decide which features are most important to you.

B. Should you buy online or locally?

Buying online can be cheaper. Some brands, such as Kipli, sell their products without intermediaries and at a lower price than in a store. However, it is important to be careful when choosing. Check hidden fees, delivery, quality of customer service, customer reviews, etc.

Also pay attention to any warranty information. Many bed bases come with a 5-year warranty, which means that if you have quality problems during this period, you can have them replaced by the factory for free. This is a good deal if it is included in the price, but be aware that not all companies offer warranties and some may charge extra for this service, which can increase the price of your bed base.

It is also good to realize that even with the best possible treatment, a bed base will not last forever. If you notice broken slats, sagging, creaking or a comfort problem, it's time to invest in a new box spring or at least replace the slats!
