Which comforter is best for a baby?

As a general rule, parents pay special attention to the bedding their little one will sleep on. Aside from the crib and mattress, what kind of comforter should you choose for a baby? The ideal comforter should combine both comfort and safety to ensure your baby’s sleep isn’t disrupted. At what age can a baby start using a comforter? Is there a specific size, weight, or material to look for? Are there any safety standards to be aware of? Follow our guide to help your baby get a good night’s sleep with their new comforter!

At what age can a baby have a comforter?

For safety reasons, it’s obviously not wise to give a baby a comforter right after birth. The baby needs to have the reflex to push the comforter away to breathe if it gets in the way, thereby preventing the baby from suffocating while sleeping.

There is no set age for when a baby should start sleeping under a comforter. Just wait until the baby is mobile enough (between 1 and 2 years old, or later). During their first few months, it’s best to opt for a sleep sack that won’t interfere with their breathing at any time. Furthermore, there’s little point in investing in a 100 x 135 cm comforter, for example, and a 40 x 60 cm pillow, when your little one will soon be moving to a toddler bed.

However, the comforter has several advantages:

  • First of all, it prevents parents from buying sleep sacks that are too big while their child is still in a crib;
  • Even if the child isn't quite ready to move to a bigger bed, it still gives him or her the opportunity to become more independent, while getting used to sleeping under a blanket;
  • Finally, this comforter can easily be used on beds of different sizes. For example, if the bed measures 70 x 140 cm, the comforter will certainly seem small, but it will cover the child well enough to keep them from getting cold.

What size and weight should a baby comforter be?

It is recommended that the size of the baby’s comforter be suited to the size of the crib, which in turn should be suited to the baby’s size. Keep in mind that the comforter should extend at least 20 cm beyond the edges of the crib to ensure the baby is completely covered and stays warm.

Is the baby’s crib 60 x 120 cm? If so, it’s recommended to choose a comforter that’s at least 80 x 120 cm or no larger than 110 x 125 cm. This may depend on how the child sleeps. If the child tends to move around a lot at night, it might be better to choose the larger size.

As for weight, the comforter should not be too heavy, or it may feel suffocating. It’s important to remember that a child may not have the strength to handle it. However, be careful not to choose a comforter that’s too light, as it might not keep the child warm enough.

It is recommended to choose a comforter with a weight between 200 and 300 g/m². These weights make the comforters suitable for use throughout all seasons of the year. However, weight alone isn’t necessarily enough, as it must be considered in relation to the materials used in the comforter’s construction. Additionally, you can find comforters with adjustable weight. While these are less common, they allow you to adjust the weight according to the season’s needs, which is obviously very practical and comfortable.

A temperature-regulating comforter

Parents can find two types of comforters on the market:

  • all-season models;
  • seasonal styles .

A four-season comforter is more than enough for a bedroom where temperature fluctuations are minimal from one season to the next. On the other hand, a season-specific comforter is essential when there are significant temperature fluctuations. In this case, it’s necessary to purchase both a summer and a winter version so that the baby doesn’t feel any change in temperature.

What material is best for a baby comforter?

The outer fabric must be dense enough to withstand the pressure of the fodder. As for the exterior, various materials are possible.

  • Synthetic fibers

A synthetic-fiber comforter is, above all, very lightweight, inexpensive, and easy to care for. Most models made from this material are made of polyester and provide adequate warmth, but they tend to have poor breathability. Synthetic fibers are most often used for children because they are very easy to clean up after bedwetting accidents. However, the potential health risks associated with their components should dissuade parents from choosing a synthetic-fiber comforter.

  • Natural Fibers

A natural-fiber comforter is a higher-quality choice. An entry-level model may not be particularly thick, but high-end models offer many advantages: the comforter is warm,absorbs moisture, and is gentle on the skin. The main drawback is its price, which is often high.

  • Cotton gauze

A baby comforter can also have a cotton gauze cover. This material is ideal for creating soft, lightweight blankets that feel incredibly pleasant to the touch. It’s also very practical for fitting them into a diaper bag, for example. Not to mention that some babies love them so much that they become their favorite comfort blanket!

A comforter can easily be used as a floor mat at home. To do this, simply choose colorful items with attractive prints. The comforter can then be placed in a playpen, for example, in the yard, or directly on the floor. You can also add a pillow to properly support your baby and keep them secure.

Caring for a Baby Comforter

No matter which baby comforter parents choose, it’s bound to go through all kinds of things. Spilled bottles, bedwetting, all sorts of stains—that comforter is in for quite an adventure!

For daily care, simply shake out the comforter regularly and flip it over from time to time. You can also take advantage of a windy day to air it out in the fresh air, but don’t forget to wash it regularly.

Quality criteria to consider

There are certain certifications and logos that immediately inspire confidence when you’re looking for a baby comforter. If the model you choose has the “CE” mark, it simply means that it fully meets European health and safety requirements (at a minimum). If it also bears the “Oeko-Tex” label, this guarantees that it’s made without any harmful chemicals. Then baby can sleep soundly—and so can the parents!
