What Makes High-Quality Bedding? - Kipli

What makes high-quality bed linens?

A sheet, pillowcases, and a duvet cover make up the set of bedding that covers a bed’s mattress. Taken separately, each of these items should provide optimal comfort to those using the bed. Comfortable bedding ensures restful nights of sleep. But what makes for high-quality bedding? It is, without a doubt, bedding that makes you feel good. With good bedding, sleepers enjoy snuggling into bed. Sleeping becomes a deeply relaxing sensory experience. Certain criteria must be considered to ensure you choose high-quality bedding. These factors depend largely on how fabrics intended for daily use are manufactured. Understanding these criteria will help you select the right bedding.

The number of threads woven per square centimeter—a mark of quality

The quality of bedding depends on how it is made—and more specifically, on the thread count. This refers to the number of threads used in one square centimeter of fabric. This information can be found on the labels of sheets, pillowcases, and duvet covers, which make up a bedding set.

There are four main categories, which reflect varying levels of quality in the fabrics used.

  1. 57-thread-count cotton. This category represents the entry-level range. In fabrics from this range, the number of threads per square centimeter is only 57. This number is not sufficient to guarantee optimal comfort. As a result, after repeated washings, it’s not uncommon to see pilling appear on sheets and pillowcases made from this basic cotton. This low-quality bedding is, however, the most readily available on the market, as it’s sold in big-box stores. Its affordable price reflects its low quality.
  2. 80-thread-count cotton percale. In this mid-range category, more threads are used, resulting in higher quality. The term “percale” can be applied to fabrics with a thread count of 80 or higher, which indicates a more comfortable weave characterized by its lightness and exceptional softness.
  3. 120-thread-count cotton percale. This category takes things up a notch. Bedding made from 120-thread-count fabric offers true comfort. Soft to the touch, 120-thread-count cotton percale is also known for its durability.
  4. 120-thread-count cotton satin. Like 120-thread-count cotton percale, this type of bedding offers a high level of comfort. 120-thread-count cotton satin is distinguished by its lustrous appearance, which results from the satin weave.

To enjoy high-quality bedding, it’s a good idea to choose 120-thread-count fabrics. They offer unparalleled softness to those sleeping in the bed and help protect mattresses with bedding that stands the test of time.

Fiber Length: The Key to Making Your Clothes Last

The length of the fibers in bedding affects its comfort and durability. For high-quality bedding, you should opt for long fibers. They ensure greater softness and durability over time. In contrast, short fibers are problematic because they do not stand the test of time. This lower quality leads to pilling on the sheets, making them feel unpleasant to the touch.

You should therefore pay special attention to the term “long fibers” when purchasing a duvet cover, sheets, or pillowcases to ensure the highest level of comfort. This mark of quality is often accompanied by the term “combed,” since the long fibers are combed to ensure that only the longest and strongest ones remain.

Choosing the Material

The fabric can play a major role in the quality of bedding. Many fabrics ensure optimal comfort. There are six main types of fabric.

  1. Cotton. This material is a sure bet in the bedding market. It guarantees exceptional softness. There are several types of cotton. There’s percale, which is very durable; satin, which adds a touch of luxury to a mattress; flannel, which provides plenty of warmth; and jersey, which is easy to care for. Choosing cotton means opting for softness and durability.
  2. Linen. Commonly used to make sheets, linen is another natural fabric that stands out for its softness. Linen is also known for its ability to naturally wick away moisture. It’s the best fabric to choose for dealing with night sweats.
  3. Silk. This fabric adds a touch of luxury to your bedding. Its satiny, silky feel ensures nights of unparalleled comfort. Naturally, silk sheets are more expensive than those made from other materials.
  4. Polyester. This synthetic material offers a soft feel at a lower cost. Polyester sheets also have the advantage of being durable;
  5. Blended fabrics. Combining two natural materials is the best way to ensure optimal comfort under the comforter. One example is a blend of linen and cotton, two high-quality materials.
  6. Bamboo viscose. This natural material is ideal for people with allergies because it has antibacterial properties. However, bamboo viscose fibers require very careful care.

Finishing touches, to make it look nice

When it comes to discussing high-quality bedding, aesthetic criteria can also be highlighted. In fact, in addition to choosing a material designed for comfort, the finishes on bedding can further enhance its quality. This is true of moiré, which gives the fabric a shifting sheen, as well as a wavy, shimmering appearance.

The fabrics you choose can be solid colors or feature patterns. For a minimalist look or a sense of purity, immaculate white linen sheets will achieve the desired effect. For a different style, midnight blue silk sheets will add a touch of elegance to the bed. In addition, a bedding set consisting of a duvet cover, pillowcases, and matching sheets generally helps create a sense of harmony.

Comfort: A Condition in and of Itself

It should be noted that the concept of quality depends above all on the desired level of comfort. The choice of material should take this into account.

Certain high-quality fabrics are particularly recommended for specific uses. For example, satin sheets are best in the winter because they provide plenty of warmth. Conversely, percale bedding is ideal in the summer because it is so lightweight.

If you want this linens to last a long time, it’s best to choose linens made from natural fibers. This is particularly suitable for a bedding set intended for an adult’s bedroom, as opposed to a child’s, which is meant to be changed more often.
