To stay cozy in bed and enjoy a restful night’s sleep, we recommend that you flip your mattress regularly. Even if you’ve been given this advice before, you may not know why it’s important. To find out why—and to learn when and how to flip your mattress—keep reading.
Flip Your Mattress for Optimal Comfort and Proper Care
Why should you flip your mattress?
There are several reasons why those who haven’t yet adopted this habit should start doing so soon. The first is, of course, a matter of comfort, because a good night’s sleep starts with a good mattress. That’s why we encourage everyone to invest what it takes in buying a good mattress.
Mattress Sagging
Whether you’re sharing a bed with someone or sleeping alone, you’ve probably noticed that each person tends to always take the same spot. This habit, while not necessarily a bad thing in itself, can lead to some discomfort when you lie down on your bed. That’s because, over time, sleeping in the same spot every night causes the mattress to sag a little more in that area, leaving the unoccupied parts virtually untouched. But this is also true even when two people share a bed. Since each person has their own body type and weight, the mattress will sag differently on each side. This difference will quickly create unevenness that will become uncomfortable and bother you a little more each night. To prevent these differences from becoming too noticeable, flipping your mattress fairly regularly is the right thing to do.
And this will be beneficial because, in addition to protecting your back (and thus your sleep), you’ll also allow the mattress to air out and get rid of dust mites. Running a vacuum over it or letting it sit in the sun for a while will be even more effective.Making this a habit can also extend the life of your mattress. Since each side ultimately bears an equal amount of pressure over the course of the year, no part will wear out faster than the others.
Aesthetics
Last but not least, there’s the question of aesthetics. It would be a shame not to be able to show your guests your bedrooms. So, you’d be doing yourself a favor by making sure your bed looks nice and presentable. To avoid unsightly, misshapen dents that even beautiful bed linens can’t fix, this is the only way to go.
When should you flip the mattress?
Mattress Condition
To know when to flip a mattress, you first need to consider whether it’s new or not. If it’s brand new, we strongly recommend flipping it once a week. If you don’t have time for that, do it at least every two weeks. Make this a habit for at least the first two months after purchase. This will allow the filling to settle and distribute itself evenly. However, this isn’t necessary for mattresses with filling that doesn’t shift, such as natural latex mattresses. If, on the other hand, your mattress isn’t new, you can flip it less frequently, but at specific times to maximize its effectiveness. Many mattresses today have two distinct sides: one designed for winter to provide extra warmth when it’s cold, and another for summer to offer the sleeper welcome coolness. For this type of mattress, you should flip it with each change of season. In other words, you’ll flip your mattress once a year. It’s not too much of a hassle.
Specialized Mattress
If your mattress is a classic (or vegan) model— that is, one without a specific “top” side—get into the habit of flipping it over about every 3 months. Ultimately, you’ll need to do this 4 times a year, just like with more modern models, though perhaps at slightly different intervals. However, there’s no rule against doing it as often as you like. The recommendations given above are only the bare minimum. You can therefore flip your mattress as needed or whenever it looks like it’s time. If you notice that one side is sagging, don’t hesitate to take the necessary action.
How to Flip the Mattress
Be careful, though, because depending on the time of year, flipping the mattress isn’t done the same way—especially if your mattress has two sides. Toward the end of January (when winter is winding down), you’ll only need to rotate the mattress from head to toe. In March, you can flip the mattress over to start enjoying the cool side. In July, keep the same side up, but rotate it again from head to toe. Finally, to prepare for the arrival of winter and cooler nights, flip your mattress again.
