What size should you choose for your bedspread?

A bedspread can be considered the finishing touch to a bedding set. It is a piece of linens in its own right, designed to make sleep as comfortable as possible. Not only is a bedspread an essential decorative element in a bedroom, but it also serves a protective function. In this way, the sleeping area remains relaxing, well-maintained, and harmonious. However, to ensure it lives up to these qualities, you need to take the time to choose it carefully and consider exactly what size bedspread to select. Are there any concrete benefits to this choice? Here are our tips for a more restful night’s sleep.

What is the purpose of a bedspread?

A bedspread should cover the entire bed: the rest of the bedding, the mattress, and certainly not the legs of the bed should be visible. Generally, a double bed has standard dimensions of 140 x 190 cm. Its bedspread should therefore be at least 200 x 230 cm. Be sure to know the dimensions of the mattress and the height of the bed, including the legs, so that the bedspread covers the bed properly.

As mentioned above, a standard double bed has a mattress measuring 140 x 190 cm. For some time now, however, other sizes have become available from bedding retailers. These include the following sizes:

  • 140 x 220 cm;
  • 160 x 200 cm, known as "queen size";
  • 180 x 200 cm, known as "king size."

Are there different models?

The bed is the focal point of a bedroom. It’s usually the first piece of furniture that catches our eye when we walk into the room. Therefore, the bedspread should complement the rest of the bedding—as well as the room’s decor —as much as possible.

To achieve a rustic or ethnic look, we recommend choosing a quilted bedspread. You can also experiment with layering several blankets, as this creates a quilted effect and a cozy style. Crocheted bedspreads are also available, which give the room a romantic and traditional feel. However, if you’re simply looking to maintain a more “classic” look, a patchwork bedspread is perfect: the geometric shapes and colorful patterns are sure to add some vibrancy to the room’s atmosphere. Finally, if you tend to feel the cold, a faux fur bedspread is a smart choice for its warmth and softness.

What size should you choose for your bedspread?

First, you need to determine the size of the bed and how you want the bedspread to drape. To ensure it provides enough coverage, here are our tips:

  • For a bed measuring 90 x 190 cm, the bedspread should be at least 140 x 200 cm (the bedspread does not touch the floor);
  • With a 140 x 190 cm bed, a 180 x 230 bedspread allows the outline of the bed to remain visible;
  • With a 160 x 200 cm bed, it's best to choose a king-size bedspread, either 220 x 240 cm or 240 x 260 cm.

In any case, when buying a bedspread, don’t hesitate to add at least 20 cm in length and 50 cm in width to the bed’s dimensions to ensure the bedspread is the right size. If you don’t know the exact dimensions of a bed, don’t panic—to easily choose the right bedspread, simply take the height of a double bed and multiply it by two. Then add the size of the mattress.

Another method involves measuring the width of the bed from the floor on the right side to the floor on the left side. Finally, you can also use a tape measure to simply measure the mattress and the bed. By taking the time to gather this information, the bedspread will perfectly fulfill its dual role: protecting the bedding while also serving as an essential decorative element.

What are the benefits of choosing the right size for this blanket?

Choosing the right size for your bedspread offers many benefits, including effective temperature regulation and protection for your bedding. This essential accessory can therefore prove to be very useful.

Protecting Bedding

First and foremost, a bedspread provides good protection for the comforter, sheets, and mattress. In fact, instead of getting into the bedding, dust is forced to remain on the surface of the bedspread. This way, the bedding wears out much more slowly. This makes it the perfect solution for a guest room that isn’t used very often.

Providing warmth in the winter and coolness in the summer

On cold winter nights, a bedspread with a good weight keeps you nice and warm. This practical feature remains just as useful during the summer months. In fact, during this season, you can do without the thick blanket and use just the bedspread to enjoy its coolness and softness.

And to help keep your bedspread fresh every day, be sure to shake it out regularly and vigorously to remove dust, and leave it out in the open air for a few hours so it can air out properly. For more thorough cleaning, most models are machine-washable, though it’s best to check the care label.

Accessorizing Your Bedroom Decor

A bedspread is a great decorative accessory. Whether you choose a solid color, a multicolored design, or a medley of patterns, it highlights the personal touch of your bedding. For those who love their bed more than anything, a bedspread is therefore a design piece of choice.

Of course, a bedspread isn’t an absolute must-have. Sheets, bedding, and a good-quality blanket will suffice in most cases. But if you’re looking for extra comfort and a more stylish look for your bedding, a bedspread is the perfect accessory. All that’s left is to find the right size so you can enjoy it to the fullest with the help of these tips.
