Duvet for two people: What size should you choose?

Duvet for two people: What size should you choose?

Perhaps you're one of those people who especially enjoy wrapping themselves up completely in their comforter to get a good night's sleep. For that to be possible, the comforter on your bed needs to be big enough.

Are you looking to replace the comforter on your double bed, but feeling overwhelmed by the various sizes available on the market? It’s true that comforter sizes aren’t the same as your bed’s dimensions—they’re slightly longer and wider to ensure they fully cover the bed and the person sleeping in it.

Should I choose a 220 x 240 cm comforter or a 240 x 260 cm comforter? What size comforter is best for a 140 x 190 cm double bed?

We invite you to explore the correspondences between bed sizes and duvet dimensions, along with all our tips for choosing the right duvet.

Why is it important to choose the right size for your comforter?

Getting a good night’s sleep depends entirely on choosing high-quality bedding. This means sleeping on a good bed and a good box spring, but it also means choosing the right pillows and comforter. So why is it so important to choose the right comforter?

In addition to the type of comforter (goose down, feather comforter, etc.), it’s important to choose one that’s the right size. If your comforter is too small, it won’t cover you well enough and will let air in in some places, which can cause you to wake up briefly or feel a chill. It could also restrict your movements during the night.

On the contrary, a comforter that’s too large will drag on the floor and be difficult to handle. The comforter will then be too heavy and weigh down on the sides of the bed, which will be just as cumbersome when you move around.

To enjoy comfortable and pleasant nights, it’s important to choose a duvet size that fits your bed. You should also consider other factors, such as weight (depending on the season), treatments (dust mite-resistant, stain-resistant, etc.), the sleepers’ body type, and, of course, your budget.

What are the sizes of double-sized comforters?

Do you sleep in a double bed for two people? If so, what are the different duvet sizes available on the market for this type of bed? There are, in fact, several sizes of double beds, which can make it difficult to choose the right duvet.

You can choose from a comforter in the following sizes:

  • 220 x 240 cm;
  • 240 x 260 cm;
  • 240 x 280.

The 220 x 240 cm comforter

This duvet size is the standard size for a double duvet. It is therefore the duvet size you'll find most easily on the market.

The comforter, which measures 220 cm long by 240 cm wide, is ideal for beds measuring 140 x 190 cm or 140 x 200 cm —which are also standard sizes for double beds. If you have a bed of this size and choose this duvet size, the duvet will hang over the sides slightly while still allowing plenty of room to move around. It’s large enough if you want to wrap yourself completely in your duvet.

The 240 x 260 cm comforter

Do you have a larger-than-standard queen-size bed (160 x 200 cm)? If so, the ideal dimensions for your comforter are 240 cm long by 260 cm wide.

These large dimensions allow it to perfectly cover large double beds, providing optimal comfort. It is also suitable for beds with high headboards, wide mattresses, or even box springs, as it drapes neatly over the sides of the bed.

The 240 x 280 cm comforter

When it comes to larger beds—specifically King and Super King size beds (180 x 200 cm and 200 x 200 cm)—you can choose the duvet with the largest dimensions: the 240 x 280 cm duvet.

For these extra-large beds, choosing the right comforter is essential, since it needs to cover the entire bed and hang down more than 20 cm on each side. This comforter size can also be used on a queen-size bed if you’re looking for a very wide comforter to snuggle up in.

The Special Case of Small Double Beds (sofa beds, loft beds, etc.)

If you're looking for a comforter for a small bed, such as a sofa bed, a BZ, or a loft bed, you can choose a more suitable size: the 200 x 200 cm comforter.

Although typically designed for large single beds, it is also ideal for a double bed on a loft or in an alcove (120 x 190 cm). A larger comforter could restrict sleepers’ movement because it hangs down too far on the sides.

Good to know: When it comes to the size of the duvet cover, the choice is easier. Just pick a cover that’s the same size as your duvet.

Factors to Consider When Choosing the Right Duvet Size

As you can see, the most important factor in choosing the right comforter is the size of your bed. Your comforter should cover the entire length and width of the bed and hang down sufficiently on the sides without touching the floor.

However, this is not the only factor to consider when choosing the ideal comforter. You should also choose your comforter based on the sleepers’ body size. The larger a person is, the larger the comforter needs to be to cover the body properly. This factor is even more important for a double bed or when two people are sleeping in the same bed at the same time.

If you or your partner tend to move around a lot, it might be a good idea to choose a model that's wide enough to keep you covered all night long.

Finally, one last factor may also be important: aesthetics. This applies in particular to the length of the bedskirt on each side of the bed. Pillowcases that are too short could look unattractive. Most people prefer a bed with pillowcases that extend about 20 centimeters. The height of the bed should also be taken into account to ensure there is sufficient length for the pillowcases. On the other hand, if you prefer a neatly made bed, you’ll need to choose a duvet with a narrow width so you can tuck in the edges.

While the size of a comforter is certainly the most important factor in your decision, there are other factors that will help you make the right choice when purchasing one. Aside from size and dimensions, don’t forget to choose your comforter based on other factors such as the type of filling, weight, treatments, and ease of care. It’s important to consider all these factors to ensure optimal comfort and a restful night’s sleep.
