Everything You Need to Know About the Different Types of Mattress Bases

With the emergence of new technologies and the creativity of certain manufacturers, there are now many different types of bed frames, making it sometimes difficult to sort through the various pros and cons of each model.

However, it is essential to be familiar with the full range of available options in order to choose the right box spring and determine which mattress is best suited to pair with it, so you can enjoy a comfortable bedding setup tailored to your needs.

We therefore invite you to learn more about the different types of bed bases, which play an important role in sleep quality because they actively help dampen movement during the night and allow the bedding to breathe.

How do you choose a slatted bed frame?

Slatted bed bases have been the most widely used and common type in our bedrooms for many years. The most common model is the slatted bed base with visible slats. This type of bed base offers several advantages that undeniably speak in its favor and explain its success.

In fact, the design features of the slatted bed frame make it very easy to maintain and provide excellent natural ventilation for the mattress, thanks to the gaps between the slats.

When choosing a slatted mattress, however, you should focus on three main criteria, starting with the material the slats are made of. It is therefore advisable to choose solid wood slats— ideally solid French wood (beech or poplar)— that have not been chemically treated. You should also determine which level of flexibility (softer or firmer slats) best suits your body type and your mattress.

Finally, it is important to ensure that the slat mounting system is of high quality to prevent the box spring from falling apart over time.

The popularity of the slatted bed frame can also be attributed to its perfect compatibility with the best-selling mattresses — namely , those made of synthetic foam or natural latex— with a preference, if possible, for latex, which is more comfortable and less harmful to the environment.

Slatted bed base or slatted frame?

What is the difference between a slatted bed base and a slatted frame? A slatted bed base is a complete product consisting of a solid wooden frame and fixed legs—also made of wood—designed to hold a mattress directly, forming a bed.

The slatted frame consists simply of a rectangular structure made of four thin metal tubes, to which slats are attached. The slatted frame may come with removable screw-on legs, but it may also be supplied without legs, in which case it must be placed on the bed frame’s mounting brackets.

While a slatted frame has the advantage of being inexpensive, it is also not very sturdy and ultimately needs to be replaced regularly—either because the entire structure warps or because the slats sag or break. Its durability and comfort are therefore not competitive when compared to a slatted bed base.

The slatted bed base

Less well known than the slatted bed base, the zone-support bed base was originally designed as an electric massage bed base. It is now available in a classic version without a motor.

The main feature of a pocket-spring mattress is that it consists of rubber springs mounted on ball joints. Each spring is independent of the others, which provides good sleep independence when the mattress is used by a couple.

Some models allow you to adjust the firmness of the lumbar or shoulder areas to customize the comfort of your bedding. A slatted bed frame is the perfect complement to a natural latex mattress.

What is a floor-mounted bed frame?

A solid-board box spring consists of a wooden board with holes to allow air to circulate under the mattress. This type of box spring is very firm and very sturdy, but is gradually being replaced by slatted box springs, which are more comfortable and hygienic.

Choosing a box spring is an option best suited for people who do not suffer from back pain and want extremely firm support.

Spring Mattress Bases

Spring box springs represent the oldest technology. Whether they use biconical springs or pocket springs, these box springs have one notable drawback: they can only be used with a spring mattress.

Spring box springs are indeed responsible for the premature wear and tear of other types of mattresses.

Why and how should you choose a box spring?

An upholstered bed frame refers to a bed frame—usually made of slats—that is covered with fabric and onto which you simply place a mattress to form a bed.

Upholstered bed frames are therefore valued for their decorative and practical qualities, offering a choice of fabric styles and colors. It is generally this decorative aspect that dictates the choice of an upholstered bed frame model.

A upholstered bed frame is an effective way to achieve a minimalist look for your bedding, while also allowing you to choose a decorative style that complements the rest of the bedroom.

Electric bed bases

The electric bed base is adjustable and motorized to provide personalized comfort by raising either the upper body or the feet. For example, an electric bed base allows you to get into a very comfortable position for reading or to relax with your legs slightly elevated.

As you might expect, electric bed bases are more expensive to buy than other types of bed bases.

A custom bed frame?

Some manufacturers offer the option of having a custom bed base made. Customization options may include the type of slats, the dimensions of the bed base, or—in the case of an upholstered bed base—the style of the fabric used to cover it.

Whatever your reason for choosing a custom bed base, this is the solution for getting a unique, made-to-measure product.

A decorative bed frame that combines comfort and style

The term “decorative bed frame ” primarily refers to upholstered bed frames and their fabric or other covering materials. In fact, you can choose a decorative style—such as leather, for example—to add a special touch to a bedroom.

A decorative bed frame can also refer to a children's bed frame, featuring a structure shaped like a playhouse, a chest, or another decorative design.

A DIY bed frame kit: good idea or bad idea?

When you have a very tight budget for buying a flat-pack bed frame, or when transportation is an issue, it may be worth considering a flat-pack bed frame.

While price is the main advantage of a ready-to-assemble slatted bed frame, it comes at the cost of a complicated assembly process that requires great care. Furthermore, the product’s basic comfort and relative sturdiness seem to limit its use to that of a guest bed, even when paired with a high-quality mattress.

The half-corbeille size

A half-basket-style bed frame is distinguished by its shape, which features a rounded cutout at two of the frame's corners. When all four corners are rounded, it is referred to as a basket-style bed frame or mattress.

This specific type of bed base—which can be slatted or spring-based, and upholstered or unupholstered—is designed to match the shape of certain antique wooden beds. These bed bases therefore allow you to preserve a period bed while enjoying the comfort of a modern bed base.
