Choosing a Mattress Brand: Criteria and Comparison - Kipli

Choosing a Mattress Brand: Criteria and Comparison

Every year, new players enter the bedding market. This large number of mattress brands leads to intense competition. Each brand distinguishes itself by offering models that stand out in terms of manufacturing, comfort, price, and other factors. These criteria directly influence the quality of the mattress and help determine how to choose a mattress. We are neither the best-positioned nor the most objective to conduct a comparison. Nevertheless, here are the factors to consider before buying a mattress. We’ve used four brands as examples, each offering a different type of mattress.

Choosing a Mattress Brand: Key Considerations

Before buying a mattress, you should establish certain selection criteria: personal comfort, body type, condition of the box spring, etc. Based on these characteristics, you can compare different mattresses and determine which one—among foam, spring, memory foam, and natural latex mattresses—is right for you.

Thickness

While thickness does not guarantee a mattress's quality or comfort, it is still a factor to consider before making a purchase. The ideal thickness of a mattress depends on age, weight, the mattress's composition, andthe condition of the bed.

Density

This indicator provides information on the mattress's comfort level. The denser the mattress, the greater the support and firmness. And the more weight is placed on the mattress, the denser it needs to be.

Sustainability

Time takes its toll, even on the best mattresses. However, a low-end mattress, which offers less comfort, wears out faster than a high-quality mattress. Manufacturers generally provide an estimate of their products’ lifespan. This estimate does not take into account certain factors, such as body type or the bed’s location. One characteristic in particular affects a mattress’s durability: its breathability.

Sleeping Independence

This comfort factor is important for couples. Sleep independence refers to whether or not you feel your partner’s movements during the night. With a mattress that lacks quality sleep independence, you may experience brief awakenings during your sleep.

Mattress materials: synthetic or natural?

In the past, this factor was not important to buyers. But environmental concerns and the desire for healthier consumption have revolutionized the bedding market.

Most mattresses are still made from petroleum-based materials, such as memory foam or polyurethane. Their production requires large amounts of fossil fuels, water, and chemical treatments to make them flame-resistant and to combat bacteria and dust mites. Synthetic materials are used to cover both foam and spring mattresses.

Eco-friendly mattresses are often made from high-quality materials such as wool, cotton, and natural latex. They offer an eco-friendly alternative to foam, spring, or memory foam mattresses. Good for the planet, they provide far better comfort and body support than other mattresses.

Additional Services

Bedding products are very expensive. But buying a mattress is an investment that lasts about ten years. Brands compete to offer services that satisfy their customers: warranties, delivery options, trial periods, and so on. If no single mattress brand stands out in your comparison, these services may be the deciding factor.

The price

Of course, price is a factor when choosing a mattress brand. However, it’s important to understand the price differences between various brands. A high price doesn’t necessarily mean high quality: major brands pay a significant number of middlemen. Similarly, the manufacturing locations and the quality of the materials affect the cost.

4 bedding brands, 4 mattress styles

Each bedding brand offers a specific type of mattress. For example, Simmons offers spring mattresses, Bultex offers synthetic foam mattresses, and Tediber offers memory foam mattresses. Finally, Kipli sells natural latex mattresses.

A brand of spring mattresses: Simmons

The French brand has a solid reputation: it invented the first spring mattress! Active in the bedding market since the 19th century, Simmons offers a wide range of pocket-spring mattresses. Some models also feature memory foam. One of the brand’s key strengths isthe independent support provided by its mattresses. The pocket springs support every part of the body. Combined with memory foam, the pocket spring mattress offers a perfect balance of softness and firmness.

On the other hand, the material surrounding the pocket springs is made of polyurethane foam. Similarly, the memory foam used in certain models also contains this material. Derived from petroleum, this foam has a disastrous environmental impact. Furthermore, it is not particularly breathable, which promotes heat, moisture, and bacterial growth. Finally, the brand offers a 100-night trial period and free shipping. However, the cost of a return is €100. The 5-year warranty is shorter than those offered by other brands. Prices vary and range from entry-level to high-end models.

A synthetic foam brand: Bultex

Bultex has developed its own polyurethane foam technology, called “Bultex Nano foam.” This synthetic material has a more open-cell structure than conventional foams. The brand is a pioneer in the use of polyurethane products. In addition, all of these mattresses undergo a chemical treatment to repel dust mites and inhibit bacterial growth.

Nevertheless, the product is certified under the Oeko-Tex Standard 100, which confirms the absence of certain harmful substances.

Bultex Nano foam is similar to memory foam and provides good support for pressure points (shoulders, lower back, etc.). The brand offers several mattress models at fairly affordable prices. However, the warranty period is shorter than that of other brands.

A memory foam brand: Tediber

The comparison continues with the French brand Tediber, which sells its mattresses online. It offers a universal mattress, available in several sizes. Its success lies in the affordable price of its mattresses. Each mattress consists of three layers of polyurethane foam and a washable synthetic fabric cover. In terms of comfort, the mattress stands out for its firmness. Delivery is very fast, taking between 24 and 48 hours. Tediber offers a 100-night trial period to test the mattress, as well as a 10-year warranty. If you’re not satisfied, the brand will take the mattress back at no cost.

Aside from the fact that it uses products that are harmful to the environment, the Tediber brand has a few strengths, particularly in terms of comfort and the services it offers. It offers one of the best values for money on the bedding market.

A brand of natural latex mattresses: Kipli

The mattress offered by Kipli stands out not only for the comfort it provides but also for its environmental credentials. The entire mattress line is made from an exceptional material: 100% natural latex. Hand-stitched in Italy, the mattress is reversible, with a firmer “summer” side and a softer “winter” side. Due to its high density (between 85 kg/m³ and 95 kg/m³), it is suitable for all body types. Finally, the washable cover contains organic cotton.

Unlike other brands, Kipli strictly avoids any toxic materials derived from petrochemicals. This philosophy has been recognized with numerous certifications, such as OEKO-TEX® STANDARD 100, Eurolatex, and CATAS. You get a 100-night trial period, and the mattress is covered by a 10-year warranty.

The only drawback of the Kipli mattress might be its price, which is higher than that of other brands. But this is due to the high quality of the materials used and the meticulous craftsmanship. The brand also chooses to manufacture its mattresses in Europe, which inevitably results in higher production costs.
