Sleep quality is a major factor in our health. That’s why it’s essential to have a good bed. In this article, we explore the importance of a good bed.
Although it’s commonly believed that only the quality of the mattress matters, the bed and its box spring play an important role in determining the overall quality of your sleep. What is a box spring? And which box spring is best for sleeping? We’ll explain a little more here, since everyone is different.
We all know that choosing a good mattress is essential for improving the quality of our sleep. We usually consider the firmness, material, and size of the mattress. But don’t underestimate the importance of your box spring. In fact, choosing a good box spring can account for up to 30% of your mattress’s firmness. Keep in mind that defective, broken, or poorly designed box springs can affect the quality of your sleep. They can cause your mattress to sag or become misshapen. In this case, your body wouldn’t receive even support, which could negatively affect your posture. That’s why, to get the most out of your mattress, you’ll need the right box spring. Today, there are many options to suit everyone’s needs and every budget. In the rest of this article, we’ll explain what a box spring is and the factors you should consider when choosing one.
The Importance of a Box Spring
Mattresses need some kind of support to stay in good condition and provide the right level of firmness for your body. There’s nothing stopping you from placing your mattress directly on the floor, but a box spring or platform can offer many benefits, starting with comfort and durability.
The bed frame is important because, in addition to providing proper support, it allows for better ventilation of the mattress.
Everyone’s main concern when choosing a box spring is the type of support it will provide and how it will affect the quality of the mattress. You should also know that some mattresses work best with certain types of box springs. Before buying a box spring, we recommend that you check directly with the mattress brand where you purchased your mattress, since many companies now offer box springs as well. Box springs should always be chosen based on the type of mattress you plan to use.
In most homes, the most common bed bases consist of a set of wooden slats. Other bed bases may have pocket springs. It’s important to keep in mind that the type of bed base you need may vary depending on the type of mattress you have. In general, we recommend slats because of the support they provide. Rigid slats offer more firmness, while flexible slats provide more flexibility. Coil springs are not recommended, especially with latex or foam mattresses, as they can sag underneath. But we’ll go into more detail below.
What are the benefits of using a box spring?
A box spring provides better hygiene and makes it easier to care for your mattress
A box spring protects the mattress from insects, dust mites, and allergens that may be found on the floor. It also prevents your mattress from accumulating mold and moisture, which can cause it to deteriorate quickly. Box springs play an important role in reducing the risk of respiratory ailments, especially if they are made from natural materials.
It’s important to remember that box springs are essential for innerspring mattresses. These mattresses have more space inside them, which creates an environment conducive to dust mites. Even if they’re labeled as breathable, mattresses should be placed on a surface that promotes air circulation. A box spring will allow your mattress to breathe, keeping it cooler and, therefore, more comfortable.
A box spring improves support and extends the life of the mattress
Without a base, your mattress will be more likely to sag and cause discomfort and pain that can ruin your sleep. This is because mattresses should be placed on a box spring, not on the floor; furthermore, choosing the wrong box spring can shorten the mattress’s lifespan. Mattresses also require maintenance. After years of use, your mattress may begin to lose its quality. And without proper support, it could even end up sagging. This often happens with double beds or memory foam mattresses, as they are more prone to damage.
What are the different types of bed frames?
Bed bases can be spring, slat, or upholstered. Thus, in addition to the advantages mentioned, the bed base not only looks elegant but also provides good protection.
If you're thinking about buying a new bed frame, we highly recommend choosing a slatted bed frame because of its features and high level of breathability.
Beds with upholstered box springs or sofa beds have an elegant look. However, it is highly recommended to choose natural materials. This reduces exposure to toxins and chemicals often used in the production of furniture and beds.
The Slatted Mattress Base
As mentioned earlier, this classic version is divided into two categories: the rigid slatted bed frame and the slatted bed frame without suspension. This design offers a high degree of firmness that will satisfy anyone who suffers from back pain or who wants a firm bed. Naturally, those looking for a bit of give and more softness will have to opt for a flexible slatted bed frame.
The latter offers more flexibility and less firmness than the rigid slats. So if you want a soft bed—especially if you sleep on your side—we recommend the flexible slats. (Feel free to chat with our team using the chat box in the lower right corner of the screen if you’d like more specific advice.)
The advantage of slatted bed frames is the breathability they provide for the mattress, which greatly reduces the risk of moisture buildup. They are also much easier to clean (both the inside of the frame and the slats)—all you need is a damp cloth. This is essential for people prone to allergies, as well as those who suffer from joint pain or rheumatism.
A slatted bed base also gives you the option of having more independent sleeping surfaces. This means that if you sleep with a partner, both of you can turn over at night without disturbing the other person.
The upholstered bed frame
A sofa bed is the classic version of any bed frame, but it is covered with fabric that is usually breathable.
There are usually several models:
- The classic model that does not come with a base, but to which legs can be added.
- The upholstered bed frame comes with a base included. It looks more like a bed, and it's very practical because it also has a more attractive and decorative appearance.
The upholstered bed frame also offers some interesting advantages.
First of all, you can be sure your mattress will stay in place. The fabric holds everything together much better, and even if you toss and turn while you sleep, the mattress will stay put. If you care about aesthetics, you’ll especially love this model. It’s also the right choice for you if durability is one of your top priorities. That’s because the wooden base and the mattress won’t come into contact with each other. Its main drawback: ventilation. With the fabric cover, the mattress won’t breathe as well. It’ll also be a little harder to clean.
Although it is possible to vacuum it directly, dust and other particles cannot be completely removed. Therefore, this type of flooring is not particularly well-suited to the needs of people with allergies or those sensitive to dust mites.

How to Choose Your Slatted Bed Base?
When we ask ourselves how to choose a box spring—whether it should be firm or flexible—we often forget to consider the type of wood used. Spruce, pine, and beech are the most common woods used to make box spring slats. If you’re looking for quality, we recommend choosing beech, as it provides flexibility and extends the life of your mattress.
But spruce and pine are also good options, mainly because of their price, which makes an eco-friendly bed base more affordable for people on a tighter budget. However, these materials are less durable. You can always choose a firm box spring or a soft-slat box spring made of spruce or pine if your budget doesn’t allow for a beech one. On the other hand, we recommend avoiding particleboard or fiberglass at all costs.
