While warnings about the state of the planet continue unabated, the number of possible actions to address global warming, in particular, is growing through citizen and industry initiatives. Every action, no matter how small, is another step toward a new way of life: one that is more ethical and respectful of both the environment and humanity. That is why it is always worthwhile to stay informed about global developments, to learn what you can do on your own level, and to regularly update your knowledge of new, effective actions you can take.
Given the vast amount of information available on ecology, we’ve selected five relevant and fairly comprehensive books on the subject. They come in different formats and approach these critically important topics in various ways, so there’s something for everyone.
1/ The Greatest Challenge in Human History - Aurélien Barrau
The renowned French astrophysicist Aurélien Barrau, whose commitment to the environment is well established, has repeatedly sounded the alarm about the environmental crisis on television. He has also spoken of an ecological revolution and material degrowth as a means of building a more rational and ethical society. Building on these observations and his stance on the issue, he published a book in 2019 titled *The Greatest Challenge in Human History*.
This book paints a deeply alarming picture of both the state of the planet and the state of biodiversity, which is leading to the extinction of animal species every year (the sixth mass extinction, according to the author). Marine animals, land animals, plants, forests, glaciers… Nothing is spared by the exponential growth of human activity.
So, yes, the beginning of the book is somewhat depressing, even if we already have a general idea of what’s in store. However, we learn a great deal—particularly about what lies ahead in the coming years—and the author offers us a glimmer of hope through a revolution in consciousness and lifestyle. This is the challenge facing an entire generation.
2/ Toward Joyful Simplicity - Pierre Rabhi
Pierre Rabhi is an iconic figure in the environmental movement. An advocate for the development of agroecology and co-founder of the Colibris movement, he sadly passed away in December 2021. He dedicated his life to promoting a different, healthier, and more natural approach to agriculture, all grounded in a positive, rural philosophy and worldview. In 2013, he published his bestseller, *Toward Happy Simplicity*. As in his previous work, Pierre Rabhi offers insights on how to live happily with the essentials, gradually move away from overconsumption, and reconnect with nature.
A true breath of fresh air, offering a vision of life at a slower pace amid all the hustle and bustle. Alternatives are possible, and a new society is taking shape based on respect for humanity and the environment. Simplicity in the way we consume, but also in the way we think. Here are some keys to a more peaceful life.
3/ Ecological War Diary - Hugo Clément
Well-known among younger audiences on social media, but also to others through his show *Sur le front*, which airs on France Télévision, journalist Hugo Clément is committed to environmental and animal causes. He regularly shares posts about ecological disasters and other news stories. His show covers a variety of topics, highlighting deceptive practices that are presented as positive, or the “greenwashing” carried out by certain companies. He also spotlights people involved in environmental advocacy.
Through his book *Journal de guerre écologique* (Ecological War Diary), he warns us about the uncertain future of our planet and the colossal challenges that await us if we do not change the way we live. From climate refugees to various polluting industries to the overabundance of plastics… We are not all equally affected by the ecological catastrophe, but we will all eventually be impacted in the medium to long term. A meeting with the key players in this new world and those fighting to protect our biodiversity.
4/ The Endless World: An Energy Miracle and Climate Change - Jean-Marc Jancovici & Christophe Blain
A graduate of the École Polytechnique and an engineer, the brilliant Jean-Marc Jancovici is an expert on energy issues. He has developed a carbon footprint assessment tool to evaluate greenhouse gas emissions. He has a particularly large following on social media thanks to his lectures and media appearances, as he is a charismatic and talented science communicator.
In 2021, he released a comic book in collaboration with author and illustrator Christophe Blain: *Le Monde sans fin, miracle énergétique et dérive climatique*.
A surprising presenter who makes the topics of energy and climate change accessible to everyone through his teaching style and sense of humor.
He shares his perspective and expertise on climate issues, nuclear energy, fossil fuels, and more. These complex topics are addressed with insight, helping us better understand today’s world and the choices we’ll need to make to ensure the world moves in a positive direction.
5/ Everything (or Almost Everything) You Need to Know About the Climate - Anne Bres, Claire Marc, Bonpote
To expand your knowledge on the topic of ecology, this book—written by Anne Bres, communications director at the CNRS Institute of Universe Sciences—addresses various common misconceptions. It sheds light on recurring questions about climate change.
Organized as a series of questions by chapter, this book addresses topics that are frequently discussed—and often misunderstood. Here, everything is explained clearly — including the connection between various environmental disasters and climate change (melting glaciers, floods, massive wildfires, etc.). Written in collaboration with blogger Bonpote and graphic designer Claire Marc, this book provides the tools needed to counter climate skeptics. All of this is presented in an appealing, easy-to-understand format.
