Why Choose a Lyocell Duvet? - Kipli

Why choose a Lyocell comforter?

Are you looking for a natural comforter? Below, we'll explain why you should choose a lyocell comforter.

There are so many different types of comforters, varying in size, composition, filling, place of manufacture… too many factors, and sometimes it’s hard to choose. At Kipli, we’ve studied the composition of many comforters because we want to offer you the best. With this short guide, you’ll discover the advantages of the composition of different types of comforters and their properties. First and foremost, to choose a good duvet, you need to understand and be familiar with its composition. All duvets consist of two parts: the “cover” and the “filling.” The filling typically determines the duvet’s warmth, but the cover and its material also play a very important role.

Different Types of Duvet Covers for Your Duvet

When choosing a duvet, we recommend that you pay close attention to the composition of the cover. There are different types of materials used to make duvet covers, and it’s important to know which one best suits your needs.
First and foremost, we recommend a high-quality cover to keep the filling from coming out of your comforter.

Cotton covers.

Most duvets have a cotton cover. If you choose this material, we recommend opting for organic cotton to ensure healthier nights. Anotheradvantage of organic cottonisthat you’ll be helping the planet (organic cotton doesn’t require treatments or pesticides, and uses up to 90% less water than conventional cotton). Cotton is anaturally breathable material, which allows for and facilitates thermoregulation, reducing night sweats.
To ensure the absence of harmful substances, we hold Oeko-Tex certification, which guarantees that the product does not emit any endocrine disruptors or VOCs (volatile organic compounds), which are commonly responsible for indoor pollution.
TheKipli comforter is made from organic cotton.

Silk covers

Natural silk comforters bring softness and elegance to your bedroom. Because they are so soft, your bedding won’t develop wrinkles. Silk is a natural material of animal origin, suitable for people with sensitive skin. For this type of comforter, you should use duvet covers without stitching.
As for care, silk comforters are not designed to be machine-washed. If washed too often, the silk loses its quality and will provide less comfort. Therefore, it is best to have them dry-cleaned.

Bamboo Covers

Bamboo is a natural material that will ensure a comfortable night's sleep. In fact, bamboo fibers help regulate temperature and humidity. Thanks to its breathability, you won't feel hot or sweat at night. Its moisture-wicking properties also limit the growth of dust mites, thereby reducing the risk of allergies.
However, this type of comforter has a significant environmental impact. Although bamboo is an eco-friendly material that grows quickly (up to 1 meter per day) and requires no treatment, it must be processed into an artificial fiber before it can be used. Bamboo must undergo a fairly intensive processing procedure that may involve the use of chemicals.
This fiber, also known as "bamboo viscose," is processed in Asia, where environmental standards are quite low. Furthermore, harvesting bamboo affects the lives of certain animals (such as pandas), depriving them of their main food source. The use of bamboo can therefore have a disastrous environmental impact.
If you choose a natural bamboo comforter, find out about how it's made, the certifications it has, and how the bamboo used is grown.

Different Types of Duvet Fillings

There are several different materials used for comforter fillings: natural or synthetic, of animal or plant origin... Here is a detailed description to help you choose the filling that's right for you.

Synthetic Nordic.

Synthetic filling can be made from various synthetic fibers, such as polyester or silicone, for example... These materials are typically derived from petrochemicals and are therefore chemical-based. Somesynthetic comfortersarelabeled as “eco-friendly comforters,” but these only have an organic cotton cover and a synthetic fiber filling. We therefore recommend that you carefully check the composition of your comforter to avoid unpleasant surprises.
This type of filling can help prevent bacteria and dust mites, as it is often treated with anti-mite chemicals. However, the major drawback is that these treatments expose the materials in your comforter to chemicals that can become pollutants in your home. Unlike natural materials, synthetic fibers are not very breathable and do not regulate temperature well.
When using this type of comforter, night sweats may occur more frequently, and you may also feel a sensation of dampness. One of the advantages of this type of comforter is that it is durable and can be machine-washed without damaging its finish. There are many types of synthetic comforters on the market, and their composition makes them quite affordable.

Lana (Advantages and Disadvantages)

Wool is a warm, temperature-regulating material. It is breathable and wicks away moisture, thereby reducing the presence of dust mites. It is a healthy material that, unlike other animal-based materials (such as feathers or down), causes fewer allergies. Finally, a wool filling provides optimal comfort. However, it’s not that easy to care for, and machine washing could damage it, so you’d have to take it to the dry cleaner.
When choosing a natural comforter filled with wool, it’s important to consider its origin and how it was processed... To guide you in your search, you can rely on certifications and look for wool that meets specific standards and requirements. To ensure you’re getting a natural comforter, check how the wool has been treated and opt for the most natural wool possible, especially if you have sensitive skin or are prone to allergies.

Natural down comforter with a feather filling

Down is the part of the body found on the belly or under the wings of geese or ducks. Down is very useful for these animals because it is a highly insulating material that keeps them warm. However, it accounts for only 10% of their plumage, making it a fairly expensive material. Feathers are heavier and provide less warmth. When you buy a comforter, check the down-to-feather ratio because, depending on the amount of down, it will be warmer, lighter, and likely more expensive.
Down and feather comforters have many advantages. They provide excellent insulation and keep you warm while also wicking away moisture. They are very soft and comfortable. These types of comforters are of higher quality than synthetic ones, and they can last longer—up to 10 years.

Attention

Down and feathers are animal-based materials that tend to harbor dust mites. Therefore, it is important to check whether your comforter has been treated with chemicals or not.
As for the plucking of animals, as PETA revealed, some suppliers remove feathers and down from live animals, repeating this process several times throughout the animals’ lives. There is a standard called “responsible down,” but even companies with this label do not adhere to it. Although it can be difficult to verify, it is always very important to choose a comforter by checking the origin and the labels on the filling.

A duvet filled with cotton

For a natural filling, you can choose cotton. Like the fillings mentioned above, cotton is a breathable material that helps regulate temperature, ensuring a comfortable night's sleep. In addition, cotton is a naturally hypoallergenic material and does not require any treatment.
Choose anatural comforter filled with organic cotton, which is less polluting and more environmentally friendly. Growing it requires less water, and no chemicals or toxic substances are used, ensuring a healthy product.

A natural Lyocell duvet

Lyocell is made fromwood fiber, often from eucalyptus. A lyocell comforter is ethically distinct because it contains no animal materials. A natural lyocell comforter is therefore vegan, which eliminates the potential risk of animal cruelty associated with the harvesting of feathers and down.
On the other hand, lyocellis an eco-friendly material. The production of lyocell does not involve any substances that are harmful to humans or the environment. Lyocell production generates very little waste and requires little water, and the manufacturing process is short, making it energy-efficient. At the end of its useful life, lyocell is naturally biodegradable.
It's a fabric with many benefits.Lyocell is a breathable fabricthatprovides excellent temperature regulation throughout the night. Thanks to these thermoregulatory properties, you won't sweat at night.

Lyocell as a Natural and Ethical Alternative

The lyocell comforter is anatural and ethical alternativetonatural comforters made from animal materials. Discover, for example, the Kipli natural comforter, which is filled with 100% TENCEL™ lyocell sourced from sustainable forestry and free of synthetic materials. To offer the healthiest comforter possible, the lyocell is free of any chemicals or toxins. Its cover is also natural:100% cotton sourced from organic farming.
After this long list of advantages offered by lyocell, we might wonder if there are any drawbacks. The only drawback is its price. In fact, it’sa material that’s more expensive to produce, especially compared to synthetic materials. However, a natural Lyocell comforter can last up to three times longer than a synthetic one. Therefore, investing in a Lyocell comforter can be a healthy and wise choice.

How do you choose a comforter?

The size of the bed

The size of the comforterdepends on the size of your mattressandyour personal preferences. For greater comfort, we recommend choosing a comforter that is slightly larger than your bed (25 to 30 cm larger on each side of the bed, or 50 to 60 cm wider than your mattress). However, the comforter should not hang too close to the floor to prevent it from collecting dust or other debris that may be on the floor.
Below is a summary of how to choose a comforter based on the size of your bed.
Mattress Width Duvet SizeSingle Bed 140x200 135 cm 200x200 or 240x220 160 cm 240x220 cm or 260x240 cm 180 cm 260x240 cm

Temperature and Seasons

Temperatures vary throughout the year. Therefore, you should choose your comforter based on the temperature in your environment.

Hay Various comforters that can be associated with each season:
  • The medium-weight duvet: ideal for transitional seasons like fall or spring, but also in winter for rooms with temperatures above 18 or 20 degrees.
  • The warm duvet: These duvets are ideal for rooms where the temperature ranges from 15 to 18 degrees or for people who feel the cold.
  • Lightweight comforter: This comforter can be used year-round; it's ideal for people who don't feel the cold easily or just in the summer when temperatures start to rise.
  • Modular comforter or 4-season comforter: ideal for adapting to all seasons, these comforters consist of a lightweight comforter and a medium-weight comforter joined together—for example, with snap buttons.
Made from high-quality materials, natural comforters are generally of higher quality and have a longer lifespan than synthetic ones; although they tend to be somewhat more expensive, they are also more comfortable and healthier.
