Optimal comfort: a slatted bed base and a suitable mattress

It goes without saying that the mattress and its box spring form an essential, cohesive unit for achieving maximum comfort in your bedding. Regardless of the technology used or the filling of the mattress, each mattress has a box spring designed specifically for it, and vice versa.

Although still relatively unknown in the sleep market compared to slatted bed bases—which are the clear market leader and, above all, sold at attractive prices—the pad-style bed base is nonetheless promising in terms of comfort and firmness, offering restful sleep and an uninterrupted night’s sleep.

The proof is in the fact that, although originally designed for electric beds, the fixed-slat bed base is now increasingly common in stores and is winning over many consumers.

What is a slatted bed frame, and which mattress should you choose to get the most out of it? We’ll explain everything you need to know below.

The slatted bed base: What is it, and what are its benefits?

The slatted bed base was therefore originally designed to meet a specific need: to be integrated into an electric bed, also known as a “lift-up bed” or “relaxation bed.”“Relaxation bed”—that says it all. In addition to the ability to adjust the position as desired with an electric bed (raising the legs, sitting up, etc.), the great advantage of an electric bed lies in its slatted bed base. It’s worth noting that an electric bed can also incorporate a slatted bed base, which is quite effective overall but less adaptable to the body’s contours.

But let’s get back to our post-style bed base, whether it’s electric or stationary. Its key feature is that its entire surface is equipped with flat synthetic rubber posts mounted on ball joints, making them very flexible. A standard-size double mattress (140 x 190 cm) has 70 individual posts.

This individuality allows the mattress base to adjust its firmness based on the specific area and the pressure exerted by the sleeper’s body weight. It can rightly be compared to a pocket-spring mattress base, which itself consists of individual springs.

Finally, a slatted bed frame offers high-quality independent sleeping comfort without having to invest in two single mattresses. However, to get the most out of this adaptability, a slatted bed frame must be used with a suitable mattress.

The slatted bed frame: Which mattress is best?

A pocket-spring mattress base is therefore a base that adapts to the body’s different pressure zones by adjusting the firmness level of each spring using ball joints. It is therefore clear that the mattress used should not be too firm in order to fully benefit from the advantages of a pocket-spring mattress base.

That is why foam mattresses are not the most recommended for this type of bed frame, as the material is too dense. This density is also the reason why foam mattresses do not breathe well, regardless of the bed frame used.

That leaves the pocket-spring mattress and the natural latex mattress (100% latex or combined with other natural materials, such as bamboo fiber or coconut fiber).

The pocket-spring mattress for a slatted bed base

A pocket-spring mattress works, in a way, on the same principle as a slatted bed base, with the springs replacing the slats. With at least 400 springs distributed throughout the mattress, this type of mattress offers different levels of firmness depending on which parts of the body are resting on it. Because the springs are individually encased in a cover, they can respond appropriately to the pressure exerted by the body. The more pocket springs a mattress contains, the greater the comfort.

That is why this mattress model is perfectly suited for a slatted bed base, as it enhances the bed base’s benefits tenfold by working in tandem with it.

However, we would like to point out that the pocket-spring mattress is not suitable for an electric slatted bed base. While the presence of springs is beneficial for a fixed slatted bed base, it does not allow the mattress to be flexible enough for an electric bed model.

The Natural Latex Mattress for a Slatted Bed Base

Unlike a pocket-spring mattress, a natural latex mattress works just as well with an electric adjustable bed frame as it does with a fixed one. This is because latex, being a naturally flexible and elastic material, is well-suited to the mechanical stresses exerted by an electric bed.

Generally speaking, this elasticity gives latex mattresses optimal sleeping comfort, regardless of the bed frame used. Like a pocket-spring mattress, a latex mattress can therefore adjust the firmness of its support based on the area of the body resting on it, with some models offering up to 7 zones of varying density.

It should be noted that this natural property of latex in no way compromises sleeping comfort, as the mattress maintains a density and firmness suitable for many people of varying body types.

Therefore, combining a slatted bed frame (fixed or electric) with a natural latex mattress is a highly effective combination. But then, which mattress should you choose: a natural latex model or a pocket-spring model?

The difference between these two mattresses lies primarily in the eco-friendly and health-promoting qualities of the latex mattress—provided you choose a natural, rather than a synthetic, one. In fact, natural latex is made exclusively from natural materials, most of which are organic (latex, bamboo or coconut fiber, organic cotton or wool, etc.). The mattress undergoes no chemical treatment and therefore contains no components that could be harmful to health. This is made possible in particular by latex’s natural antibacterial and anti-dust mite properties.

In addition, this type of mattress regulates body temperature and offers excellent ventilation, which helps wick away moisture trapped inside the mattress core.

However, to ensure that it is manufactured in an environmentally responsible manner and to guarantee that it is truly 100% natural, we recommend choosing a certified latex mattress. There are several certification labels; the main ones for bedding are:

The choice of a mattress for a slatted bed frame is therefore limited to two types of mattresses, especially if you want to enjoy all the benefits of the bed frame: pocket-spring mattresses and latex mattresses. This choice is further limited if the slatted bed frame is electric.

Since mattress density varies depending on the filling and the brand, the best way to choose the firmness that’s right for you is to follow the manufacturer’s recommendations. The only way to be sure of your choice is to test the mattress yourself, which is why we recommend choosing a mattress that includes a trial period before making a final purchase—such as Kipli, which offers a 100-night trial.
