Dimmable lights: a must-have for adjusting the ambiance throughout the day - Kipli

Dimmable lights: a must-have for adjusting the ambiance throughout the day

Simply turning on a lamp can transform a room—or a mood. In our homes, light plays a bigger role than it seems. It guides our movements, influences our circadian rhythm, and shapes our emotions. According to a study conducted by OpinionWay for Philips, 80% of French people believe that lighting has a direct impact on their well-being. So why settle for static, impersonal lighting when it’s so easy to adjust it throughout the day? That’s where dimmable lights really come into their own.

Adjust the lighting for every time of day

The ideal light is not the same in the morning, at noon, or in the evening. It must adapt to our natural rhythm and the activities we engage in.

In the morning, to help you wake up and boost your energy, opt for neutral white light, around 4,000 to 5,000 kelvins. It stimulates concentration and reduces feelings of fatigue—much like a bright cup of coffee. In the evening, on the other hand, our bodies need something softer. Warm, subdued light (around 2,700 kelvins) signals to the brain that it’s time to wind down. According to the Sleep Foundation, exposure to light that’s too cool after 8 p.m. can delay falling asleep by 30 to 45 minutes.

By adjusting the intensity and temperature of colors, we can create atmospheres that suit our needs without changing any of the furniture.

📌 What do light temperatures in kelvins correspond to?

  • 2700 K → very warm light (ideal for the evening)
  • 3000 K → soft, warm light (suitable for relaxation areas)
  • 4,000 K → neutral light (perfect for the kitchen or an office in the morning)
  • 5,000 K and above → cool light (often used in workplaces or medical settings)

👉 For home use, a color temperature between 2,700 K and 4,000 K is more than enough.

Choosing the Right Lighting: Make Way for “Light Islands”

To make light a true tool for creating ambiance, it’s not enough to simply replace a light bulb. You need to use multiple light sources and vary their positions. This is what interior designers call “light islands”: areas that are lit in a targeted manner, depending on their use.

For example, install:

  • a pendant light hanging above the dining table,
  • a swivel reading lamp next to the sofa,
  • an unobtrusive floor lamp to light a reading nook,
  • or a garland to highlight a corner or a shelf.

Ideally, choose lamps that are compatible with dimmers or “dimmable” bulbs (as indicated on the packaging). This allows you to adjust the brightness without having to replace the lighting fixtures.

And above all: avoid using only overhead lighting, which is often too bright and unflattering. It tends to “flatten” the space rather than highlight it.

From wall-mounted dimmers to smart lighting

From a technical standpoint, there are several solutions that make it easy to control light intensity. Wall-mounted dimmers remain a simple and effective option, especially for renovations. They are installed in place of a standard light switch and allow you to adjust the light with a single touch.

But for greater flexibility, smart lights are all the rage. Using an app or a voice assistant, you can:

turn a light on or off remotely,

create lighting scenes based on the time of day or the desired mood (reading, dinner, relaxation…),

and even program automatic transitions from one type of lighting to another.

It's a subtle yet powerful way to regain control over the atmosphere in your home.

Lighting and Furniture: A Combination Not to Be Underestimated

Lighting isn't everything, but it enhances its surroundings. Soft lighting makes an armchair more inviting. A well-placed lamp highlights the lines of a piece of furniture or the texture of a fabric.

Around the sofa, for example, a few well-placed light sources can transform a simple sitting area into a soothing haven. A reading lamp for curling up with a book, a soft pendant light for evenings with friends, and an adjustable accent light to match the mood of the day. Because it’s not just a matter of style—it’s also a way of living in the space.

In short: a small effort, a big change
