"Every year, nearly 5 million beds and mattresses—often made from unsustainable and toxic materials— are thrown away and, of course, not recycled. This contributes to an environmental and public health crisis."
In this context, brands like Kipli are emerging with innovative solutions, seeking to produce goods differently to protect our health and the planet.
I. The Bedding Market: A Standardized Industry
The Problem with So-Called “Standard” Mattresses
The first question is: what does “standard mattresses” mean ? Well, these are the mattresses most commonly found on the market: made from petrochemical-based foam. They account for 90% of all mattresses purchased, and their prices range from €200 to €1,500, but we rarely know what lies behind this wide price range.
And that is precisely where the problem with the bedding market lies: we accept this type of mattress as the norm, without knowing why, or what its benefits and consequences are.
If we look into the sustainability, we realize that it is very low with early subsidence as early as the first few years of use, creating back pain and other health issues. When discussing the composition of synthetic mattresses, many terms are used: polyurethane, viscoelastic foam, memory foam… But put simply, this means we spend a third of our lives on a large block of plastic (and therefore petroleum!). And this is not without consequences: these carcinogenic and toxic materials can release VOCs (volatile organic compounds) and disrupt our bodies.
A mattress like that causes pollution throughout its entire lifespan—and even more afterward—because it isn't recycled; it's simply (and unfortunately) landfilled.
A solution we all like.
In light of this, we wanted to redefine the standards of this industry by offering a responsible alternative that is just as comfortable.
We had identified several criteria—and not just any criteria:
- First, a mattress that’s durable. In other words, a mattress that doesn’t sag after three years, because having back pain—and consequently sleeping poorly—isn’t the norm.
- To ensure that the time spent on our mattress is a source of well-being, it had to be 100% healthy: no more toxic synthetic materials—only natural, chemically untreated materials.
- And the bottom line: we wanted a comfortable mattress with better ergonomics and better support. In short, simply a mattress on which we sleep (very, very) well.
In keeping with our commitment to sustainability, it was unthinkable that our mattress would be manufactured on the other side of the world, like most others. To ensure responsible manufacturing, it had to be crafted as close to home as possible, by skilled workers who are fairly compensated.
Our goal: to offer you a natural alternative
The Choice of Materials and Their Benefits
Since the name is pretty self-explanatory, you can probably guess that the main material in a natural latex mattress is… 100% natural latex!
To replace conventional foams, we turned to natural latex. Derived from the rubber tree (Hevea), it is a healthy, renewable material with natural properties that are ideal for a good night’s sleep:
- A balanced combination of comfort and support that keeps your spine aligned, promoting a good night's sleep.
- Exceptional durability that ensures optimal comfort for 15 years. According to CATAS certification and the tests conducted, it will lose less than 1% of its height over 10 years.
Let’s move on to our mattress cover, because it’s important. We designed it to be more than just a cover for your mattress. So, we added wool padding to make it feel softer and more inviting . And it’s the combination of all these natural materials that makes our mattress naturally dust-mite-resistant, antibacterial, and hypoallergenic—features that make it the ideal mattress for people with allergies.
The design of this mattress
Behind the exceptional comfort our mattress offers lies genuine expertise and a bit of technology . We designed our mattress so that its support adapts to the sleeper lying on it. Yes, you read that right—and it’s very simple!
We've created a reversible mattress with one soft side and one firmer side. And this magic is made possible by the placement of air cells within the mattress core. The size of the cells allows you to adjust the firmness: larger cells, for example, will provide more flexibility.
And what we’re most proud of is our mattress’s breathability. The air pockets allow air to circulate and prevent moisture from building up—a condition that fosters the growth of unpleasant odors and bacteria. This exceptional breathability ensures a comfortable night’s sleep and extends the life of your mattress.
The desire for local manufacturing
As you can see, sustainability and responsibility were the guiding principles behind the design of this mattress.
To ensure responsible manufacturing, we therefore turned to Italy rather than Asia, prioritizing a skilled, well-paid workforce whose well-being is our top priority.
But why Italy and not France? Good question!
Well, quite simply because there are no factories in France capable of manufacturing natural latex mattresses. There are only three factories in Europe (in Belgium, Italy, and Bulgaria), and we chose Italy for family reasons. In the 1980s, Mario, Davide’s uncle (one of Kipli’s founders), opened his own natural latex mattress factory near Milan to offer an alternative to synthetic mattresses (the petrochemical-based foams we mentioned earlier).
So we chose Sergio, who took over this workshop and runs it with the same commitment as we do to impeccable quality and sustainable production.
Our customers' well-being: our top priority.
A customer experience you don't have every day
Since our overarching goal is your well-being, providing you with healthy and comfortable bedding must go hand in hand with services that make your life easier. That’s why our latex mattresses come with a 100-night trial. Because finding the right mattress is like finding your soulmate—you have to choose it carefully. We also offer premium delivery, right to your floor and into the room of your choice.
Fair prices all year round
In keeping with our philosophy of reasonable and mindful consumption, we do not offer sales, Black Friday deals, or major promotions. It is important to us to offer a fair price for everyone—that is, fair compensation that recognizes the artisans behind this mattress. The quality of this craftsmanship comes at a cost, and that cost cannot be undermined by constant discounts. Our prices remain stable throughout the year, allowing us to maintain a balanced and reasonable profit margin.
