To make yourself comfortable in bed and enjoy a restful night’s sleep, we recommend that you flip your mattress regularly. Even if you’ve heard this advice many times before, you may not know why you should do it. Read on to find out why this is the case and when and how you should flip your mattress.
Rotate your mattress for optimal comfort and proper care. Why should you rotate your mattress?
There are several reasons why those who haven’t yet adopted this habit should do so as soon as possible. The first, of course, is a matter of comfort, since a good night’s sleep depends primarily on a good mattress. For this reason, everyone is encouraged to invest in a good mattress.
Mattress Sagging
Whether you're lying in bed alone or with a partner, you've probably noticed that each person tends to always take the same spot. While this habit isn’t necessarily a bad thing in itself, it can make you feel uncomfortable when you lie down on your bed. That’s because the mattress, since it’s pressed into the same spot every time you go to sleep, sags slightly more in that area while leaving the unoccupied areas almost untouched.
But this also applies when two people share a bed. Since everyone has a different body type and weight, the mattress will sink in differently on each side. This difference will quickly lead to unevenness, which can be uncomfortable and will bother you a little more each night. To prevent these differences from becoming too noticeable, it’s a good idea to flip the mattress regularly.
And this will do you good, because not only will you be taking it easy on your back (and thus improving your sleep), but you’ll also be allowing the mattress to air out and get rid of dust mites. A quick vacuuming or letting it sit in the sun for a while is even more effective.
This habit can also extend the life of the mattress. Since each side bears an equal amount of pressure throughout the year, neither side wears out faster than the other.
Aesthetics
The last, but by no means least, point concerns aesthetics. It would be a shame if you couldn’t show your guests your rooms. So you’d still be doing yourself a favor by making sure your bed stays looking nice and pleasing to the eye. This is the only way to avoid unsightly, misshapen dents that even beautiful bedding can’t fix.
When should you flip the mattress?
Condition of the Mattress
To know when to return a mattress, you first need to consider whether it is a new mattress or not. If it is brand new, it is strongly recommended that you flip it once a week. If you don’t have time for that, you should flip it at least once every two weeks. Maintain this routine for at least the first two months after purchase. This allows the filling to settle and distribute itself evenly. However, this is not necessary for mattresses with filling that does not shift, such as natural latex mattresses.
However, if your mattress isn't new, you can do this less frequently but at specific times to ensure maximum effectiveness. Many mattresses today have two different sides. One side is designed for winter, providing extra warmth in cold weather, and the other is for summer, offering the sleeper welcome coolness. With this type of mattress, you need to flip it every time the seasons change. In other words, you’ll be flipping your mattress several times throughout the year. It’s not too much of a hassle.
Special Mattress
If your mattress is a classic (or vegan) model—that is, one that doesn't have a specific "top" side—get into the habit of flipping it about every three months. Overall, you should flip the mattress four times a year, just as you would with more modern models, but perhaps at slightly later intervals.
However, there is no reason not to do this as you see fit. The recommendations listed above are only the bare minimum you should do. You can therefore carry out this process as needed or at your own discretion. If you notice that a panel is giving way, don’t hesitate to take the necessary action.
How do you flip a mattress?
Be careful, though, because the frequency with which you should flip your mattress varies depending on the time of year—especially if your mattress has two sides. Toward the end of January (as winter draws to a close), all you need to do is rotate the sleeping surface from head to toe.
In March, you can flip the mattress from one side to the other to start enjoying the cool side. In July, keep it on the same side, but flip it from head to toe. Finally, to prepare for winter and the cool nights, flip the mattress again.
Of course,
