Vous êtes à la recherche d’un nouveau lit et vous vous demandez quel type de lit choisir ? Outre le lit classique, vous avez en effet le choix entre différents types de couchage, du lit coffre au lit à baldaquin, en passant par le lit mezzanine.
It is precisely this option that we’ve decided to highlight, given how beneficial it can be. Loft beds are indeed becoming increasingly popular because they allow you to furnish a bedroom smartly by making the most of the available space. However, loft beds aren’t without their drawbacks and may not meet all of your expectations.
Are you thinking about buying a loft bed? Would you like to learn more about this type of bed first? If so, we invite you to explore the pros and cons of loft beds below.
The loft bed: What is it?
Before we look at the pros and cons of a loft bed, let’s first take a look at what this type of bed is. You may be wondering, in particular, what the difference is between a loft bed and a bunk bed. The answer is simple: a loft bed is elevated like a bunk bed, but it doesn’t necessarily have a second sleeping area on the floor. A loft bed can provide a single or double sleeping area.
A loft bed is a bed raised several meters off the floor, typically equipped with a ladder to access the sleeping area when the bed is stationary. You can also find electric loft beds that raise and lower using a motor, as well as retractable loft beds that are raised and lowered manually using a counterweight system.
The space under the bed can be used in various ways. There are several types of loft beds:
- the loft bed with a built-in desk;
- the loft bed with a built-in sofa;
- the cabin-style loft bed;
- the loft bed with bunk beds.
First option: the loft bed is sold separately. You then have the option to arrange the space under the bed according to your needs, by adding a desk, a dresser, a sofa, an extra mattress , storage, etc. Second option: the loft bed already includes a built-in feature such as a desk, a playhouse for children, an additional sleeping area, or a built-in sofa.
No matter what type of loft bed you choose, it will always provide you with extra space underneath the bed.
What are the advantages of a loft bed?
Now let’s discuss the benefits of buying a loft bed. It’s no coincidence that this type of bed is so popular. One of the main advantages of a loft bed is that it saves space in a bedroom while making the most of the available area.
-
A real space-saver
A loft bed lets you take advantage of the ceiling height so as not to clutter up a room. This type of bed is therefore ideal for furnishing a small bedroom. It’s especially recommended for a child’s bedroom or a studio apartment, to provide a sleeping area without taking up too much space.
By choosing a loft bed, you can maintain your living space even in a limited area, without sacrificing comfort. Would you like to sleep in a double bed, but worry it would take up too much space? If so, we highly recommend opting for a loft bed, which offers an excellent compromise.
-
A multifunctional sleeping area
Choosing a loft bed allows you to make the most of a multifunctional space in a small area. By sleeping up high, you can use the space under the bed to set up a home office, a sitting area with a small sofa, or even a walk-in closet.
Children can take advantage of this type of bed to gain extra storage space—often needed to store their many toys or clothes—to have an additional play area, or even to enjoy a built-in playhouse under the bed. Younger children especially love this type of bed for these reasons.
A teenager or young adult can take advantage of the space under their bed to set up a desk, so they can study in the best possible conditions. It’s also possible to put a sofa there to create a reading nook, a TV corner, or simply a space to entertain friends.
Adults will also appreciate the loft bed for this reason, especially if they live in an apartment with limited space. As a result, the loft bed can be a good fit for many people.
What are the drawbacks of a loft bed?
However, loft beds do have a few drawbacks that you should be aware of before choosing this type of bed. Loft beds require certain conditions to be met in order to be installed in a room and may not be suitable for children or certain individuals.
-
You need high ceilings so the room doesn't feel cramped
This seems logical, but in order to install a loft bed, a minimum ceiling height is required. You need to be able to raise the bed high enough while still leaving enough space to get in and out of bed without any trouble. Allow for a ceiling height of at least 200 cm for a bed taller than 140 cm, a minimum height of 220 cm for a bed 160 cm tall, and finally, a minimum ceiling height of 230 cm for a bed 170 cm tall.
Even if the bed is high enough to climb into, some people may not like the lack of space between their bed and the ceiling. They may feel claustrophobic. Similarly, a bunk bed is still a bulky piece of furniture that can make a room feel cramped.
-
Safety Is Not Something to Be Taken Lightly
Finally, the second major drawback of a loft bed is the lack of safety. A loft bed may not be recommended for young children, who are at risk of falling while getting in or out of bed.
This drawback can also apply to adults with mobility issues. By extension, loft beds are not recommended for people who suffer from back, knee, or joint pain. Also keep in mind that a loft bed isn’t necessarily the best sleeping option for people who tend to get up frequently during the night.
