How to Choose a Throw Based on the Season? - Kipli

How do you choose a throw based on the season?

Choosing the Right Throw for the Season

Furniture, linens, and home decor accessories: there are many factors to consider when successfully designing your interior. While personal taste should be the primary guide for your choices, it’s also important to consider the environmental impact of your purchases. Today, it’s possible to combine comfort, aesthetics, and sustainability in interior design.

Among all the decorative items, we find the throw. How do you choose the right throw? Whether used as a blanket on cold days or as a decorative accent on a sofa or bed, a throw should be comfortable in both summer and winter, as well as complementing the room’s decor. Material, weave, size, colors, patterns: how do you choose the right throw for each season?

Choosing a Seasonal Throw Based on Its Material

One of the most important factors to consider is, of course, the material of the throw. To choose the right throw, it’s therefore essential to understand the main materials used to make them, as well as the pros and cons of each. Natural, synthetic, or blended: here are the most common types of throws on the market.

Cotton throws

Cotton is the most widely used material in the textile industry (accounting for 50% of global consumption). It is a plant-based fiber that surrounds the seeds of the cotton plant. Cotton fibers are prized for the softness, strength, and breathability they impart to fabric. In fact, cotton is a naturally breathable and thermoregulatory material, making a cotton throw a comfortable choice in both summer and winter, although the weave can affect how warm it feels.

Natural fabrics: linen, wool, silk

Throws can also be made from materials such as linen, silk, or wool. These natural fibers are valued for being more environmentally friendly than synthetic materials.

Plant-based materials such as linen are valuable for their anti-allergic and antibacterial properties, unlike wool, which can cause allergies and irritate sensitive skin.

Animal-based fibers, such as wool, are known for the warm and cozy throws they produce, which are perfect for winter.

Natural throws require very specific care that must not be neglected in order to maintain their quality.

Synthetic materials

Synthetic throws are certainly the most popular among throw enthusiasts. Whether made of fleece, acrylic, faux fur, polyester, microfiber, or other materials, synthetic throws are more affordable and exceptionally soft to the touch.

On the other hand, this type of throw has poor temperature-regulating properties, making it either too light in cold weather or too stuffy in hot weather. Furthermore, synthetic throws are best avoided if you want to adopt an eco-friendly approach when shopping for home decor.

The Mix of Materials

Blended throws, also known as combined or mixed throws, are made from at least two materials. Poly-cotton throws are very common; they’re made of 50% cotton and 50% polyester, a blend that results in a particularly soft fabric. You can also choose a throw made of cotton and wool, which is warmer than a 100% cotton throw and can therefore be a good compromise as the colder seasons approach.

While combining materials allows throw manufacturers to better meet consumer expectations regarding softness and variety of styles, it’s important to remember that 100% natural materials should still be the preferred choice.

The Importance of Material Quality

The quality of the material used to make the throw is important for several reasons:

  • make sure you're comfortable in both summer and winter;
  • to have a durable throw that retains its quality for many years, even after repeated washings;
  • adopt aneco-friendly approach topurchasing items for your home decor;
  • not to have any adverse reactions to any potentially harmful ingredients it may contain.

With that in mind, it’s important to pay close attention to the labels on throws to check their composition. It’s best to choose a certified organic material. GOTS and Oeko-Tex certifications are the most common on textile products. GOTS is an organic certification issued by Ecocert, while the Oeko-Tex certification guarantees that a product is free of harmful substances.

The price of these throws is naturally higher, but since they’re meant to be used for many years as blankets or decorative pieces, their price shouldn’t be a deterrent. Because it comes into direct contact with the body, a throw should be natural and healthy.

Choose a seasonal throw based on the weave

While the fabric is key to choosing a throw that’s warm in winter and lightweight in summer, you should also consider the weave. This throw can be woven using various techniques that affect its thickness, durability, and softness.

Understanding Weaving Processes

To choose the right fabric for the right season, you must first understand the principle of weaving. It is a process of combining threads made from textile fibers. A piece of fabric is formed by interlacing threads vertically (warp threads) and horizontally (weft threads). The number of threads used in weaving is not, in and of itself, an indicator of quality. The nature and length of the fibers used must also be taken into account.

Choosing the Right Fabric for the Right Season

During the spring and summer, what we look for most in a throw is its lightness and breathability. In the fall or winter, it’s the warmth and softness of the throw that are most sought after. Since cotton is the most commonly used fabric, let’s take a look at some cotton fabrics to consider for throws:

  • the canvas, which is of standard quality and fairly stiff;
  • gauze, for a light, breathable throw;
  • double or triple gauze, for a heavier, warmer throw;
  • percale or satin, for a throw that feels especially soft to the touch;
  • flannel, with a brushed finish that makes the throw more insulating—and therefore warmer.

In any case, the fabric should be naturally breathable to ensure the throw is comfortable year-round. In addition to the throw’s warmth, you should also consider its durability, which varies depending on how often you use it. A canvas throw used only occasionally in the summer may be perfectly adequate. However, it’s best to opt for percale or satin throws so they can be used year-round.

Choosing the Right Style of Throw

A throw can be used as a decorative accent when it's not in use. Therefore, it's important to choose one that complements the decor of the room—whether it's a bedroom or living room—and suits the season.

It’s therefore important to consider its dimensions, which can be chosen based on the size of the sofa or bed it will cover, for example. When it comes to blankets, people tend to choose a large throw to wrap themselves up in completely during the winter, while a small throw is sufficient for the summer.

Colors and patterns are, of course, important factors to consider. They are primarily a matter of personal taste rather than seasonal trends. However, there are many guides available online, if needed, on the trends to follow each season when updating your interior decor.
