Choosing Furniture: Factors to Consider

Choosing Furniture: Factors to Consider

Choosing a piece of furniture isn’t just about “filling” a room. It’s about deciding on the atmosphere in which you’ll live, read, entertain, and unwind. And often, the best choices are the simplest ones: those that respect your space, your daily life, and the materials.

1) Start with usage, not style

Before thinking “beautiful,” think “authentic.” In this room, what matters most: soft lighting in the evening, a cozier floor, a reading nook, a calm atmosphere for sleeping, or a space that’s easy to live in day to day?
A sculptural light fixture won’t serve the same purpose above a table as it would in the center of a living room. A very thick rug won’t feel the same as a finer weave if you like to walk barefoot.

2) The right proportions make everything more harmonious

Dimensions are a key factor in visual comfort. If a piece of furniture is too large, it dominates the space. If it’s too small, it gets lost.
When choosing lighting fixtures, consider the ceiling height, the diameter, and the area to be illuminated. A large pendant light creates a real focal point in the room, while a table lamp defines a more intimate, discreet corner.
When it comes to rugs, size changes how you perceive the space. A rug that’s too small “breaks up” the room. A well-proportioned rug ties the elements together and brings a sense of calm to the whole space.

3) The material is the first point of contact

We live with these materials; we touch them, dust them off, and look at them at different times of day. That’s where the obvious becomes clear.

Wood provides instant warmth. When used in a light fixture, it casts a more enveloping light with lively shadows. It’s ideal for creating a soft, natural atmosphere in a living room or bedroom.

Ceramics, on the other hand, have a more mineral-like quality. They stand the test of time with simple elegance, and their glazed finish subtly catches the light.

Opal glass softens the light without dimming it. It's perfect if you're looking for soothing brightness without glare.

When it comes to rugs, wool is a timeless classic known for its comfort. It keeps you warm, insulates, dampens noise, and creates a cozy, cocoon-like feeling. Viscose, with its brighter sheen, adds depth and a subtle shimmer that brings colors to life. Cotton often balances the overall look, making the weave more supple and comfortable underfoot.

4) Maintenance: Choose based on your schedule

A beautiful interior is often one that’s easy to live in. Ask yourself a simple question: “Will I take care of it naturally, without even thinking about it?”

For a wooden light fixture, gently dusting it is usually enough, and you should avoid using water to preserve the material.
For a rug, regular care makes all the difference: vacuuming, rotating it occasionally to even out wear, and acting quickly in the event of minor everyday accidents. If you enjoy entertaining or have children, opt for muted tones, heathered yarns, or patterns that blend well with everyday life.

5) Durability: Choose items that age well

“Sustainable” furniture isn’t just a word. It’s a lasting impression. The finishes, the joinery, the density of a weave, the stability of a structure, the quality of a textile cord.
Here’s a good test: if the piece remains beautiful as the light changes, when the room empties, and when you live with it without taking any special precautions, then it has found its place.

6) Consistency: Create a unifying theme without making everything uniform

Harmony doesn’t come from uniformity. It comes from a subtle connection between the pieces.
You can choose a “material” thread (wood and natural fibers), a “light” thread (opal, cotton, sandy tones), or a “texture” thread (wool and more graphic weaves). Then, let it breathe. A bold piece, surrounded by calm. That’s often when a space becomes soothing.

7) The story behind the object

Finally, there are the elements that aren’t immediately apparent, but that matter: craftsmanship, manufacturing, and the way the object was conceived. When a light fixture is handcrafted, when a rug is woven using a meticulous technique, you can sense it. And that presence gently transforms the room, day after day.

Choosing your furniture means choosing your everyday life. Take your time. Be thoughtful. And enjoy that simple pleasure of feeling at home.
