Choosing the Best Mattress: How to Navigate All the Brands

Choosing the Best Mattress: How to Navigate All the Brands

Did you know that nearly 90% of the mattresses sold in Europe are synthetic? By “synthetic,” we mean petroleum-based materials, such as plastic. Yes, yes, you heard that right: we might actually be sleeping on plastic!

Simply put, a mattress consists of a core (the inside) and a cover (the outside). Depending on the materials used, our bedding can therefore be more or less harmful to our health, our comfort, and the planet. Of course, the materials used in the core and cover aren’t the only factors to consider when choosing a mattress. Here are a few examples: Would you want to carry a package weighing at least 30 kg all by yourself up four flights of stairs without an elevator? Are you willing to spend several hundred euros only to end up replacing your bedding after two years because the quality wasn’t up to par? Do you want to sweat profusely at night, summer or winter, because your mattress isn’t breathable enough? If you answered “no” to all these questions, follow our guide to choose the best mattress based on your expectations and needs;)

For those who are in a bit of a hurry, take a look at the summary table below, which includes all the information we'll cover in more detail later in this article.

We've listed the various factors to consider when buying bedding. You can look into them on your own, but it's a big task. Don't panic! More detailed comparison charts are provided throughout this article.

Product Features

To provide you with the most comprehensive comparison possible, we’ve selected five brands with different product offerings. In this article, you’ll find Tediber, a digital brand specializing in memory foam mattresses; Bultex, which offers synthetic mattresses; and Simmons, known for its spring mattresses. We’ve also included Cosme, a brand of natural latex mattresses, and André Renault, which sells mattresses made of latex and synthetic materials. When buying a mattress, it’s very important to pay attention to the structure of the core and the cover. The materials used, the density, and the comfort zones are key factors in determining how your mattress will feel when you use it.

While the mattress core is important, don’t overlook the cover, which will be in direct contact with your sheets. Also, consider whether the cover can be removed for washing if you want to keep your mattress in top condition!

Services

Buying a mattress is a significant investment. After all, we’re talking about a piece of bedding that weighs several dozen kilograms and is meant to last for many years. Not to mention the price, which runs into the hundreds of euros. With all these factors in mind, you’d expect impeccable service! Cost and delivery terms, warranty duration… Here’s a comparison of the services offered by each brand to help you make an informed decision.

Price

You’re probably wondering what accounts for such price differences. It’s mainly due to the different distribution models. To put it simply, the fewer middlemen there are between the manufacturer and you, the lower the price. That’s right! Every middleman in the supply chain takes a cut, which drives up the final price for the consumer. At Kipli, we’ve therefore chosen to sell directly to you. The latex arrives at our factory in Italy, where it’s transformed into a mattress before being shipped directly to your home. Easy, right? ;) On top of that, we add a minimal markup that allows us to keep the business running. The other factor that affects the price is promotions. As you know, we never have sales. Not because we don’t want to, but because we can’t. Our mattresses are sold at a fair price, so lowering the price would mean compromising on quality. So since it’s out of the question for us to lower our artisans’ wages, use subpar materials, or manufacture under poor conditions, we can’t offer promotions. If other brands can afford to do so, it’s because they inflate their prices the rest of the year. In short, you’re only paying a fair price when the product is on sale.

In that case… Why are Kipli mattresses still more expensive than other brands, even though those brands raise their prices outside of sales? That’s the third factor affecting price variation! The materials used and the chosen manufacturing location(s) will have a major impact on the final price. For example, synthetic materials have a lower production cost for manufacturers than natural materials like latex. Similarly, manufacturing in Europe is more expensive than in Asia. That’s why a 100% natural latex mattress made in Italy costs more than a polyurethane foam mattress made in China (where only the cover is made in France, which allows the label “made in France” to be applied… QED).

Why We Created Kipli

To sum it up, what is the motivation behind Kipli? It can be summed up in four words: keep it simple, do it better.

Behind each of our products lies a comprehensive approach to reducing their environmental impact. To achieve this, We are working on five strategies to create truly sustainable products. There’s the environmental aspect, of course, but also sustainability, health, comfort, and price. Our approach is part of a comprehensive sustainable development strategy. We don’t just want to bring new products to market. We want to give everyone the opportunity to choose a healthy and responsible option for their bedding. We want to give you everything you need to make an informed decision when buying the mattress that's right for you. Even if it's not a Kipli mattress (though we'll be a little sad).
