At a time when well-being has become a top priority, the furniture industry, meanwhile, is navigating mixed waters.
On the one hand, it appeals to us with promises of attractive, functional, and comfortable furniture designed to enhance our daily lives. On the other hand, it contributes to poor indoor air quality —sometimes even more concerning than the air we breathe outdoors. This is largely due to the materials and manufacturing processes used. Faced with this dilemma, Kipli stands out for its commitment to furniture production, offering alternatives designed to harmonize our well-being at home with that of our planet.
The sofa market: a (highly) standardized sector
The Problem with So-Called “Standard” Sofas
What is meant by “standard sofas”? In fact, these are the most common models on the market, made primarily of foam derived from petrochemicals (in other words, petroleum) and wood covered with melamine, a type of plastic.
These sofas are often upholstered in polyester (plastic, once again) and manufactured thousands of kilometers away. With prices ranging from €300 to €1,500, it’s only natural to question the actual quality of these pieces of furniture.
And that’s where the problem lies. It seems we’ve settled for these sofas by default, without really questioning their origin, their benefits, or their environmental impact. When we examine their durability, it becomes clear that the inferior quality of the foam leads to rapid deterioration. The seats start to sag after just a few years of use, affecting both their comfort and their appearance.
When it comes to the composition of these synthetic sofas, technical terms such as polyester and polyurethane are often mentioned. To put it more simply, this means that we spend a large part of our lives in contact with petrochemical products. This reality is not without consequences, as these materials tend to emit volatile organic compounds (VOCs) that are potentially harmful to our health.
A sofa like this causes pollution throughout its entire life cycle, starting with its production. A lengthy manufacturing and distribution process across the globe, often under concerning working conditions. Their environmental impact extends far beyond that, with the release of harmful endocrine disruptors into our homes. This impact continues right through to the end of their life cycle, as they are rarely recycled and usually end up in landfills, contributing to environmental degradation.
An eco-friendly solution that everyone loves.
In light of this, we wanted to redefine the standards of this industry, by offering a responsible alternative that is just as comfortable—if not more so. We had identified several criteria, and not just any criteria:- First, a sofa that’s durable. In other words, a sofa that doesn’t sag after three years, but retains its comfort and good looks long after that.
- To ensure it protects your home and doesn't contribute to indoor pollution, it had to be natural—free of chemical treatments and plastics.
- And the bottom line: we wanted a comfortable sofa with better ergonomics and, above all, better support.
In keeping with our commitment to sustainability, it was unthinkable that our sofa would be manufactured on the other side of the world, like most others. To ensure responsible manufacturing, it had to be crafted as close to home as possible, by skilled workers who are fairly compensated.
Our goal: to offer you a natural alternative
The Choice of Materials and Their Benefits
To bring this beautiful project to life, we wanted to combine natural materials to enhance the design of our Arco sofa.
For the frame—which we wanted to be visible—we chose high-quality solid ash wood.
Next, to replace a large portion of the synthetic foam, we opted for untreated natural latex, which is more durable and, above all, much more elastic. Latex doesn’t lose its shape and retains its comfort for longer. We’ve retained a small amount of foam to round out the corners of our sofa—something that’s impossible to do with latex or wood. But don’t worry—it accounts for only 1.8% of the total composition.
And finally, we chose organic cotton to replace the polyester covers. Natural and free of chemical treatments, it’s an option that’s good for your lungs and the planet.
The design of this sofa
With all these beautiful materials, we needed to combine technical expertise and craftsmanship to bring out the best in them. The guiding principle when we designed the Arco sofa was flexibility. To ensure this sofa fits seamlessly into your home, we offer a variety of cover and wood finishes. For the solid ash frame, you can choose between a light or dark finish by applying a vegetable oil, which gives it a slightly darker appearance than its natural color.
To provide you with true comfort, we’ve turned to Kipli’s signature material: 100% natural latex. It’s the perfect choice for combining comfort, durability, and environmental responsibility.
And finally, the cover comes in 4 colors, all made of organic cotton to ensure the highest quality.
The desire for local, family-run production
To bring this project to life, we turned to a workshop in Spain for the know-how and expertise of its artisans, which they have honed over the years. They carefully select the materials needed to craft each piece, which they then make by hand.
Their care and attention to every detail ensure exemplary traceability at every stage, resulting in sustainable and responsibly produced pieces.
And that's why we love them—for their dedication. 💚
