"Every year, nearly 5 million beds and mattresses—often made from unsustainable and toxic materials —are thrown away and, of course, not recycled. This contributes to an environmental and public health crisis."
In an industry where sleep quality is inextricably linked to health and well-being, the bedding market faces critical challenges. Issues such as the massive importation of bedding products, the questionable composition of mattresses, and a lack of durability are cause for concern.
In this context, brands like Kipli are emerging with innovative solutions, seeking to produce differently in order to protect our health and the planet. And that’s where our Ultimate Mattress comes in!
The bedding market: a standardized industry
The Problem with So-Called “Standard” Mattresses
The first question is: What does “standard mattresses” mean? Well, these are the mattresses that have been most common on the market since our grandparents’ time: they’re made with springs. To prevent you from feeling the springs when you lie down, the mattresses are filled with petrochemical-based foams, and that’s where several problems arise…
Since springs provide natural bounce to mattresses, they offer poor sleep independence —meaning you'll feel your partner move every time you have a bad dream.
Next, there’s the issue of durability: while these mattresses usually last longer than foam mattresses, their comfort level declines rapidly; the springs may start to squeak after a few years, and the top layer of foam can quickly sag due to poor quality.
When discussing the composition of the synthetic foams used in mattresses, many terms are used: polyurethane, viscoelastic foam, memory foam… But put simply, this means we spend a third of our lives on a large block of plastic (and therefore petroleum!). And this is not without consequences: these carcinogenic and toxic materials can release VOCs (volatile organic compounds) and disrupt our bodies.
A mattress like that causes pollution throughout its entire lifespan—and even more afterward—because it isn't recycled but is simply (and unfortunately) landfilled.
A solution we all like.
In light of this, we wanted to redefine the standards of this industry by offering a responsible alternative that is just as comfortable.
We had identified several criteria—and not just any criteria:
- First, a mattress that’s durable. In other words, a mattress that doesn’t lose its comfort after a few years and doesn’t squeak.
- To ensure that the time spent on our mattress is a source of well-being, it had to be 100% healthy: no more toxic synthetic materials—only natural, chemically untreated materials.
- And the bottom line: we wanted a comfortable mattress with better sleep independence, good ergonomics, and better support. In short, simply a mattress on which we sleep very (very) well.
In keeping with our commitment to sustainability, it was unthinkable that our mattress would be manufactured on the other side of the world, like most others. To ensure responsible manufacturing, it had to be crafted as close to us as possible, by skilled workers who are fairly compensated.
Our goal: to offer you a natural alternative
The Choice of Materials and Their Benefits
As you've probably gathered by this point in the article, we wanted to design A spring mattress that is both comfortable and healthy. To achieve this goal under our circumstances, we didn't want traditional springs that squeak and keep you tossing and turning all night. So we opted for pocket springs (nearly 800 for a standard size, to be precise). They provide a independence from sleeping arrangements, a good breathability and a support enough to put even the most insomniac to sleep.Next, we needed to add an extra layer of comfort so that everyone would feel comfortable sleeping on it. And that’s why we turned to natural latex when designing our top layer. Derived from the rubber tree (Hevea), it’s a healthy, renewable material with natural properties that are ideal for a good night’s sleep:
- It provides a comfort layer that relieves pressure points on your body while keeping your spine aligned, promoting quality sleep.
- Durable and long-lasting, providing optimal comfort for 15 years. According to CATAS certification and the tests conducted, the latex will lose less than 1% of its height over 10 years.
To envelop all these layers, we designed a mattress cover made of eucalyptus pulpand organic cotton so that it is naturally hypoallergenic. And to add that final touch of comfort, we’ve lined it with wool. It provides a plush feel while also offering antibacterial and thermoregulatory properties to your mattress. By combining all these natural materials, our mattress remains just as breathable—and naturally dust-mite-resistant, antibacterial, and hypoallergenic.
The design of this mattress
Behind the exceptional comfort our mattress offers lies genuine expertise and a bit of engineering. We designed our mattress so that its support adapts to the sleeper lying on it.
With pocket springs, we’ve chosen to prioritize individual comfort. Whether your bedmate tosses and turns all night or not, you won’t feel a thing. To ensure your mattress provides balanced support, we’ve added seven comfort zones—each with varying levels of softness—to adapt to the different areas of your body.
And what we’re most proud of is our mattress’s breathability. The springs allow air to circulate and prevent moisture from building up—a condition that fosters the growth of unpleasant odors and bacteria. This exceptional breathability ensures a comfortable night’s sleep and extends the life of your mattress.
The desire for local manufacturing
As you can see, sustainability and responsibility were the guiding principles behind the design of this mattress. To ensure responsible manufacturing, we therefore chose to source from Italy rather than Asia, prioritizing a skilled, well-paid workforce whose well-being is our top priority.
But why Italy and not France? Good question! Well, quite simply because there is no factory in France capable of manufacturing a hybrid mattress made of natural latex and pocket springs. There are only three factories in Europe (Belgium, Italy, and Bulgaria), and we chose Italy for family reasons. In the 1980s, Mario, Davide’s uncle (one of Kipli’s founders), opened his own natural latex mattress factory near Milan to offer an alternative to synthetic mattresses (the petrochemical-based foams we mentioned earlier).
So we chose Sergio, who took over this workshop and runs it with the same commitment as we do to impeccable quality and sustainable production.
