The dining table is one of the most frequently used and important pieces of furniture in a home. It’s where we enjoy our daily meals and gather for moments of togetherness, but it also serves as a decorative element. To fulfill these various purposes, it must therefore provide maximum comfort. Among the factors to consider when choosing the right one are, of course, the table’s dimensions.
In fact, table dimensions vary from one model to another. This factor should therefore be taken into account when choosing a dining table to ensure you select the right model. Considering the number of users, the shape, and many other criteria, let’s explore how to determine the right dimensions for a dining table.
The Right Size Based on the Number of People
Depending on its shape and style, a dining table can seat between 2 and 12 people. Its dimensions therefore vary depending on the number of people seated and how they are arranged around it. To determine these dimensions—particularly the length of the table—you should, among other things, multiply the number of guests by 60 cm.
The dining table for 2 people
Dining tables designed to seat two people are generally square or round. For square tables, the ideal side length is 70 cm. For round tables, the diameter is also 70 cm.
The dining table for 4 people
At a rectangular dining table for four people, guests are usually seated in pairs along the length of the table. The ideal dimensions for such a setup range from 110 to 120 cm in length and 80 to 90 cm in width. For a square dining table that seats one person on each side, the ideal width is between 100 and 110 cm. Finally, for a round dining table, the diameter of the tabletop can range from 80 to 100 cm.
The dining table for 6 people
The dimensions of a dining table that can seat 6 people depend mainly on the possible seating arrangements. For example, if you choose a configuration with 3 people facing each other, the length and width are 180 cm and 75 cm, respectively. On the other hand, if you choose a 6-person dining table with one person at each end, the ideal dimensions are 120 cm in length and 90 cm in width.
As for square or round tables, the ideal side length of the tabletop is 100 cm for square tables and 80 cm for round tables.
The dining table for 8 people
For a dining table that seats 8 people, and given the shape of the table, the specifications are as follows:
- A rectangular table that is 220 cm long and 90 cm wide;
- 140 to 160 cm on each side for a square table;
- 160 cm is the diameter of a round table top.
The dining table for 10 people
For 10 people, the ideal dimensions are as follows:
- 240 to 280 cm long and 90 to 100 cm wide for a rectangular table;
- 150 to 160 cm for each side of a square table;
- A round table with a diameter of 180 cm.
The dining table for 12 people
The approximate dimensions of a rectangular dining table that seats 12 people are 280 cm in length and 120 cm in width. However, the specific seating arrangements chosen can affect these measurements.
So, if you choose to seat 6 guests along each long side, you’ll need a table that’s 360 cm long—that is, 6 x 60—with a width of at least 75 cm. On the other hand, if you prefer to seat guests closer together—with 4 people along the length and 2 across the width—the table should be 240 cm long and 120 cm wide.
For square or round tables, the tabletop can measure 200 cm. Finally, for oval tables—which are often used to seat up to 12 guests at weddings—you should allow 50 cm of space around each guest. Taking this into account, the standard sizes are 280 x 120 cm and 300 x 100 cm.
The ideal height for a dining table
The height of a dining table refers to the distance from the floor to the top edge of the tabletop. The standard height ranges from 70 to 76 cm. However, several factors can influence this height, including: the users’ height, the height of the legs, and the height of the chairs.
Users
Depending on the users’ body type, the size of the dining table may be smaller or larger than the standard range of 70 to 76 cm. Thus, if the users are tall, the dining table should be large, and vice versa for shorter people.
The Seat
Seat height is the distance required to sit comfortably while being able to move your knees and legs freely. It ranges from 20 to 30 cm below the tabletop. However, it depends on the type of table and the size of the table legs.
The legs of the dining table
The height of a dining table's legs is determined by subtracting the thickness of the tabletop from the total height of the table. Thus, for a table that is 76 cm high and has a tabletop thickness of 3 cm, the height of the legs is 73 cm, or 76 - 3 = 73. For this type of furniture, the ideal seat height is 43 cm.
The right dimensions based on the number of chairs
The number of chairs is equal to the number of guests and is just as important when determining the dimensions of the dining table. As mentioned above, the table should provide 60 cm of space for each person, particularly along its length. However, for even better dimensions, you should allow for a minimum of 110 to 120 cm between the chairs and the wall.
The Right Thickness for a Dining Table Top
When calculating the height of a dining table, the thickness of the tabletop must also be determined before purchasing the furniture. This thickness depends primarily on the tabletop’s other dimensions, namely its length, width, diameter, and side. Therefore, you should consider:
- a thickness of 30 to 40 mm for a table with maximum dimensions of 150 x 75 cm;
- a thickness of 40 mm for a table with dimensions ranging from 150 x 75 cm to 190 x 90 cm;
- a thickness greater than 40 mm for a large table.
Other factors to consider when choosing the size of your table
While the dimensions listed above are certainly the most important factors to consider when designing or purchasing a dining table, they are still only a general guide. In fact, other significant factors can influence the dimensions of the furniture.
Available space
It is essential to consider the available space in your dining room when determining any dimensions before designing, including length, width, diameter, and height. In this case, you must ensure that the distance of 110 to 120 cm between the chair and the wall is maintained.
Custom-Made
When opting for a custom-made table, the dimensions may vary. However, it is important to choose reasonable dimensions that provide guests with all the comfort they need.
