How to Choose a Unique Mirror? - Kipli

How do you choose a unique mirror?

Choosing a Decorative and Unique Mirror

Mirrors are among those small decorative elements that can make a big difference in a home. They serve more than just a decorative purpose; they’re also used for looking at oneself, for reflecting light when their placement in the home allows it, and for creating the illusion of more space.

There are so many different types and styles of mirrors that it can actually be difficult to find one that will serve its purpose perfectly. Furthermore, having a mirror has become the norm in one specific room: the bathroom.

Let's explore all the decorating tips and tricks to help you understand the criteria and factors that will guide you toward choosing the mirror with the most suitable design, based on your specific layout and interior design style.

Shapes, Sizes, and Frames of Mirrors

Is there a limit to the shapes of mirrors available on the market? You don’t need to be an expert to immediately answer “no.” Indeed, manufacturers’ imaginations are brimming with creativity and originality. As a result, the most traditional and expected shapes—rectangular, round, or square—are now facing competition from a much more original trend.

Here are a few examples of these types of mirrors, which are decorative in their own right:

  • oval;
  • star or sun;
  • triangular;
  • porthole;
  • letter of the alphabet;
  • unstructured or asymmetric;
  • a window-like design;
  • drop of water;
  • geometric;
  • etc.

Choosing a mirror’s design is therefore the first step in decorating, and it can stand on its own if the shape is original enough to catch everyone’s eye. However, it’s important to note that a mirror with a very unique shape makes a strong decorative statement—which can be an excellent choice for a living room or entryway, but might be a bit too unconventional for a bedroom or bathroom.

When it comes to mirror sizes, we have to face the facts: there is a wide variety of sizes, and the larger a mirror is, the thicker and heavier it is, due to the manufacturing techniques used in the mirror industry. Similarly, if the goal of buying a mirror is to bring in more light, it’s best to choose a large mirror. The choice of mirror size should be based on several criteria, including its specific location, the size of the room where it will be placed, and the type of mirror—in other words, how it is mounted.

As a reminder, depending on the model, indoor mirrors can be hung or mounted on a wall, or they can be placed on the floor, on top of a piece of furniture, or on a mantel. Floor-standing mirrors may have a stand, similar to the mirrors commonly found in a bedroom.

Most traditional-style mirrors feature a frame—made of wood or metal—that gives them their aesthetic appeal. A wooden frame can work well in a clean, minimalist decor, while a rectangular mirror with a metal frame fits perfectly into an industrial-style interior or adds a touch of modernity to a classically decorated living room.

Certain materials, such as bamboo, rattan, plastic, or marble, are also used for mirror frames, each offering a decorative style that can be incorporated depending on the intended or existing decor.

In summary, the shape, size, and material of a mirror’s frame are elements that greatly contribute to its decorative effect, which is why they should be chosen carefully, based on your needs, tastes, and the atmosphere you wish to create. This obviously applies to all styles of homes.

A mirror for every room in the house

Not all mirrors are designed to suit every room in the house. So it's time to take a look at the best possible choices, moving from room to room.

A mirror for the living room

In a living room, a mirror can play a central role in the decor, whether it’s hung on the wall, placed on the mantel, or set on a piece of furniture. In addition to its purely decorative aspect—which should be chosen based on the existing interior style and design—a mirror can be used to define a specific area or make the space appear larger.

If a sofa is positioned facing a window in the living room, hanging a large rectangular mirror on the wall behind the sofa can enhance the sense of space and bring in plenty of light. The same applies to a living room that opens onto the garden; placing a mirror opposite this view of the garden will significantly expand the sense of interior space.

The Essential Bathroom Mirror

The traditional placement for a bathroom mirror is above the sink or basin. From an aesthetic standpoint, it’s best to stick with a mirror with a white frame, with the only restriction being that you should avoid hanging a mirror that’s wider than the sink.

As for the rest, there are several possible shapes to choose from, including the current trend: mirrors with a more modern shape than the traditional rectangle. Importantly, no matter how unique it may be, a bathroom mirror must remain practical to use and be made of neutral, non-magnifying glass.

Mirrors for a bedroom

While many types of mirrors can work well in a bedroom, there are two particularly interesting ways to use them: on the wall above the headboard or placed on the floor.

In a bedroom, a large rectangular standing mirror makes getting dressed easier. Placing a mirror on a chest-of-drawers-style piece of furniture creates a dressing table effect. Finally, you can also place a small, unique, and decorative mirror on the nightstand.

Making a Foyer or Hallway Feel More Spacious

Entrances and hallways are areas that can be enhanced by adding a mirror. For example, placing a beautiful floor-length mirror in an entrance makes it easy to create an optical illusion—and even add a touch of color by choosing a mirror with a colored frame.

In a hallway, several strategically placed mirrors can be used to create a truly unique interplay of light and reflections.
