Our Tips for Choosing the Perfect Fitted Sheet

Have you ever wondered what the right way is to choose a fitted sheet? Indeed, bedding should be selected with the utmost care. It’s not enough to simply go for the colors or patterns that appeal to you the most. Beyond that, you need to consider the material, the size, and the depth to ensure you choose the perfect fit. It should be comfortable, durable, and suited to your mattress. It’s essential that it gives you a good night’s sleep and allows you to rest effectively!

Did you know that sleep is essential for the body and your overall well-being to function properly? To sleep peacefully and wake up feeling refreshed, there’s nothing better than investing in quality bedding. Of course, the bed and the box spring are essential for a good night’s sleep. But that’s not all. In fact, the sheets are also very important. Not all sheets are created equal. Beyond their decorative appeal—which can guide your choice—the priority is to have sheets that are well-suited to your needs and made from comfortable materials. If you don’t know where to start, don’t panic! In this article, we’ll explain how to choose the right fitted sheet for more restful nights.

Choose a fitted sheet that fits your bed

The first step to getting the perfect fitted sheet is to take the exact measurements of your mattress, both in length and width. Beds manufactured in France come in five different sizes:

  • 90 x 190 cm for single beds;
  • 140 x 200 cm (or even 140 x 190 cm in some cases);
  • 160 x 200 cm, which is queen size;
  • 180 x 200 cm, or king size;
  • 200 x 200 cm, which is the XL king size.

The size of your fitted sheet must match the dimensions of your mattress. A sheet that’s too small is difficult to put on and can cause the mattress to bulge. It’s also not uncommon for it to slip off while you sleep, leaving the mattress exposed. On the other hand, if the fitted sheet is too large, you may end up with annoying and uncomfortable wrinkles. In any case, a sheet that’s the wrong size means restless nights and poor protection for your mattress.

Finding the Right Mattress Topper Height Based on Mattress Thickness

In addition to the size of the mattress, you should also consider its thickness to ensure it matches the height of the fitted sheet. The fitted sheet wraps around the mattress and holds the fabric in place. Thanks to its small pleats, it wraps around the corners of the mattress throughout its entire thickness, extending all the way under the mattress. In a way, it is the fitted sheet that secures the sheet to the mattress.

To ensure a fitted sheet fits perfectly, the trick is to measure the height of the mattress and add about five centimeters. For example, if the mattress measures 160 x 200 cm and is 30 cm thick, choose a fitted sheet that is 160 x 200 cm with a depth of 35 cm.

You may want to consider choosing a fitted sheet that’s one size larger than necessary, especially if you have a mattress topper. This will allow the sheet to tuck in more deeply under the mattress for a perfect fit. On the other hand, a fitted sheet that’s too small won’t stay in place and may come loose if you move around a lot in your sleep.

Choose the fabric that's best for your sheet

For your comfort, we recommend choosing natural fabrics. Synthetic fabrics such as polyester or viscose are certainly less expensive, but they are also less comfortable and soft to the touch.

Cotton remains a safe bet, both for its durability, breathability, and hypoallergenic properties, and for its ease of care. At the same time, even though it is more expensive, it is a material with high absorbency that provides ideal protection for the mattress.

Even better than regular cotton, organic cotton is a more eco-friendly, healthier, and more durable fabric that offers just as much comfort and maximum durability. Organic cotton sheets are made from untreated cotton that is gentler on the soil. This makes them a very hygienic percale fabric that comes into contact with your skin.

Finally, linen is another option for your fitted sheets. Lightweight, durable, and highly breathable, it provides immediate comfort the moment it touches your body. However, if you prefer a linen fitted sheet, keep in mind that it’s best to choose one that’s larger than your bed. This is because linen tends to shrink when washed.

Choose based on your color preferences so that the sheet matches your decor

Of course, your color preferences also play a role in choosing your fitted sheet. Bedding is an integral part of your interior decor, so it’s important to give it some thought. Ideally, you can coordinate the colors of your fitted sheet with those of your duvet cover and pillowcase to create a sense of harmony.

However, this isn't a universal rule, and since the sheet won't be very visible under the comforter, you can also choose mismatched colors to give your bedroom a more contrasting look.

It is said that blue is the best color for a good night’s sleep. White and light colors convey purity and delicacy. Ideally, it’s best to avoid colors that are too intense or jarring, such as orange or black, for example. In any case, the most important thing is to make sure that the bedding does not contain any harmful substances.

Choose high-quality linens when you shop

Finally, for optimal durability and a fitted sheet that will stand the test of time, choose a high-quality fabric. The quality depends on the material you select, as well as the weave of the fabric. By “weave,” we mean the interlacing of the warp threads (running lengthwise) and the weft threads (running widthwise).

The quality of a fabric is therefore determined by the number of threads per square centimeter. On average, basic cotton sheets have 57 threads per square centimeter, which means they have a loose weave. In contrast, cotton percale has 80 threads per square centimeter. This ensures that your sheets are stronger, softer, and more durable over time.

However, the weave isn't the only factor that determines the quality of a piece of linens. The yarn itself must be strong. Otherwise, your sheet will inevitably wear out.

As you can see, choosing a high-quality fitted sheet ensures a good night’s sleep and rest. You now have all the information you need to make the right choice. Kipli has focused on sheets made from natural materials so you can enjoy a healthy and restful night’s sleep! Finally, to keep your bedding in the best possible condition, be sure to wash your fitted sheet regularly—ideally once a week. Before putting it in the washing machine, check the care label to select the right cycle that won’t damage the fabric or fade the color.
