How to Care for Your Velvet Sofa? - Kipli

How do you care for a velvet sofa?

The velvet sofa is one of the most elegant pieces of furniture there is. Pleasant to the touch and aesthetically pleasing, velvet offers other benefits for your living room. For one thing, the way it’s made gives it great durability. As an insulator, it effectively traps heat and radiates it back to anyone lying on the sofa during long winter evenings. Finally, it reflects light beautifully, making the velvet sofa the centerpiece of the living room.

But what if it has an unsightly stain? Since velvet is a fairly delicate fabric, how can you properly care for your sofa? Here’s an overview of the best tips for cleaning your velvet sofa.

The Different Types of Velvet for Your Sofa

Both decorative and unique, the velvet sofa is known for its unparalleled softness compared to other fabric sofas. However, there are different types of velvet:

  • silk velvet, which is distinguished by its sheen and pleasant texture;
  • cotton velvet, smooth or ribbed;
  • linen velvet, with a matte, raw appearance;
  • wool velvet, with a velvety appearance;
  • Mohair velvet, which is very durable.

Finally, some sofas are upholstered in synthetic velvet made from polyester or nylon. While these materials are quite durable, they are derived from plastic—and thus from the petrochemical industry. It’s better to choose natural velvet over a synthetic alternative, for obvious environmental reasons. Furthermore, synthetic fabrics undergo numerous chemical treatments to make them antifungal and fire-resistant. These chemicals linger in the sofa and eventually pollute the entire room, increasing health risks.

The weaving methods used for velvet—an interlacing of threads known as a weave—give it its distinctive appearance. More than just an aesthetic benefit, this makes the fabric exceptionally durable. However, this quality also comes with its own set of drawbacks: velvet is so tightly woven that it tends to trap dust. That’s why a velvet sofa or armchair requires regular care, even more so than a fabric or leather sofa.

Regular Care for Your Velvet Sofa

To keep it in pristine condition, a velvet sofa should be brushed frequently: first, on a daily basis using a fabric brush, and then more thoroughly once a week with a vacuum cleaner. While velvet is certainly quite durable, it can be sensitive to certain cleaning tools. Therefore, avoid brushing it with a scouring pad or a regular brush.

Please note: Do not use a steam cleaner on a velvet sofa. This fabric cannot tolerate excess moisture. It could be seriously damaged, even though not all velvets react the same way when exposed to water. For silk velvet, for example, you should absolutely avoid applying any liquid to it. Dry cleaning is the preferred method. Cotton velvet, on the other hand, can better withstand being wiped with a damp cloth.

How do you deep-clean a cotton velvet sofa?

Of course, you should always opt for eco-friendly cleaning, especially when it comes to a velvet sofa, which is more delicate than others. If it’s made of cotton velvet, however, the sofa is less sensitive to moisture. You can therefore clean it using white vinegar. A natural and economical product, white vinegar is a true miracle solution for just about any cleaning task around the house.

White vinegar can be used for both deep cleaning and removing stubborn stains. Add it to a mixture of soapy water (plain water and a few drops of dish soap).

  1. After putting on cleaning gloves, dip a dry cloth into the mixture (50 cl of white vinegar to 20 cl of soapy water).
  2. Then, wring out the cloth as much as possible so as not to get the sofa wet.
  3. Always test the solution on a spot on the sofa that’s not very visible. If the color of the velvet bleeds onto the cloth, it means the fabric is too sensitive to moisture.
  4. If the mixture works, brush the entire surface of the sofa to ensure there are no traces left behind.
  5. Finally, rinse with a clean, wrung-out washcloth, then dry the sofa using a hair dryer on the cool setting.
  6. If the stain is stubborn, you can sprinkle talcum powder over the entire surface of the sofa and leave it overnight. The next morning, simply vacuum to remove any residue.

How do you clean a silk velvet sofa?

A silk velvet sofa requires the utmost care. It must be dry-cleaned; otherwise, the fabric will be irreparably damaged. Therefore, Sommières clay is applied to it. The high absorbency of this natural clay powder makes it highly effective against grease stains.

  1. Still wearing household gloves, sprinkle the sofa with Sommières clay.
  2. Next, gently massage the dirtiest or most stained area.
  3. Let the product sit overnight. The next day, vacuum the fabric or shake it out if the cover is removable.

A Velvet Sofa That's Looking Worn: How Can You Restore It?

Whether you bought it for a bargain at a flea market or found it in the attic after it had been forgotten for several years, etc., sometimes you just fall in love with a piece of old furniture. In the case of a velvet sofa, unfortunately, there’s a good chance the fabric is caked with a thick layer of dirt. Time has taken its toll, and the sofa has lost its luster and brilliance. But it’s entirely possible to restore this piece of furniture thanks to a powerful product: ammonia.

This solution, made by mixing ammonia and water, is an excellent stain remover. It also restores the vibrancy of the colors on a velvet sofa. However,ammonia can be dangerous if used improperly. That’s why you should always wear household gloves, a mask, and safety goggles to prevent ammonia fumes from coming into contact with your eyes and nose. While working, keep the windows wide open to ventilate the room.

  1. Mix 10 cl of ammonia into a large amount of lukewarm water, then add a few drops of dish soap.
  2. Next, dip a clean cloth into the solution, then wring it out as much as possible.
  3. Scrub the entire velvet sofa, paying special attention to the dirtiest areas.
  4. To rinse, use a slightly damp washcloth.
  5. Finally, dry it with cool air using a hair dryer.

We can’t stress this enough: regular maintenance prevents the need for deep cleaning. Of course, there are several ways to prevent stains or dirt buildup. For example, applying a protective coating is effective, especially if you have children or pets. Admittedly, it may not look quite as elegant, but in the event of an accident, you can simply toss the cover in the washing machine!
