How to Take Good Care of Your Bedding: Our Tips

A good night’s sleep always starts with healthy bedding. However, even the best mattress can lose its comfort if it isn’t properly cared for. Bedding care isn’t just about washing the sheets—it involves a series of simple, regular steps that help extend the life of your mattress, prevent dust mites, and maintain impeccable bedding hygiene. In this article, we’ll walk you through, step by step, how to care for your bed to maintain optimal comfort day after day. Airing, rotating, washing, stain removal… discover the best practices for maintaining your bedding naturally and ensuring healthier, longer-lasting, and more restful nights.

Air out the room every day

Air outyour bedding—it’s the first stepin bedding care. This refreshes the air, reduces humidity, and limits the growth of dust mites. Open the windows wide for at least 15 minutes a day, ideally in the morning and evening. The more the room is ventilated, the healthier your bed linens stay, and unpleasant odors disappear naturally.

Air out and sanitize the mattress

Beyond the bedroom, the mattress also needs to breathe. Once a week, remove all bedding and leave the mattress uncovered for 30–60 minutes. If possible, expose it to sunlight for a few minutes (preferably indirect light) to remove moisture and disrupt dust mites.

Vacuum every 2 to 4 weeks (using a clean upholstery brush) to remove dust and allergens. Avoid using steam cleaners on delicate foam. For mattresses with removable covers, strictly follow the care instructions for the cover.

Flipping/Rotating the Mattress: The Right Frequency

Rotating the mattress and alternating the sleeping positions helps distribute pressure, minimizes sagging , and extends the mattress’s lifespan. For a new mattress: rotate it 1 to 2 times per week for 2 months. After that, follow a quarterly schedule that’s easy to remember:

  • January: Rotate head ↔ feet.
  • End of March: Turn it over (summer side up if it's a two-season blanket).
  • July: Rotate head ↔ feet.
  • October: Turn it over (winter side up if it's a two-season blanket).

If the mattress isa single-sided (e.g., certain pocket-spring mattresses), simply rotate it from head to toe. If the mattress is heavy or difficult to handle, rotating it alone is still very beneficial.

Bedding: How Often to Wash It

Forimpeccable hygiene , wash fitted sheets, pillowcases, and duvet covers every week (or at least every two weeks) at 40°C using a mild detergent. Separate your bedding from your everyday clothes to prevent the transfer of allergens. Duvets require special care: check their composition and opt for professional cleaning for down and feathers.

To improve breathability, choose natural fabrics (organic cotton, linen, lyocell). They regulate nighttime moisture better and promote a more restful sleep.

Washing and fluffing your pillows

's " " pillows accumulate sebum, sweat, and dust. Wash themat every 2 to 3 months, depending on the material. Pillows filled with feathers or down should preferably be taken to a dry cleaner. For machine-washable models, follow the recommended temperature, add two laundry balls to preserve the pillow's loft, and let them air dry thoroughly.

Between washes, air them out and use aprotective pillowcase to avoid washing them too often.

Removing Stains Without Damaging the Mattress

Treat the stain immediately with agentle cleaner and lukewarm water (dab, do not rub). For blood stains, usecold water. Avoid using too much water so as not to saturate the core of the mattress. Let it air dry, ideally in indirect sunlight or near a draft.

For a mattress witha removable cover , remove the cover according to the instructions. For example: Some natural latex models feature a zippered cover that is dry-cleanable, which is very convenient in case of spills.

Bonus: Protect and Extend the Lifespan

A few simple additions can make all the difference: breathable mattress protector (to prevent stains and allergies), ensuring proper ventilation of the bed frame, and an annual check of the bedroom: no moisture, good air circulation, and a nighttime temperature between 16 and 19 °C. If necessary, replace the mattress if you notice sagging, morning aches and pains, or more frequent awakenings.
