An overview of the pros and cons of a natural latex mattress...
Comfort and well-being are paramount when choosing a bed. A natural latex mattress is recommended for people who suffer from back pain or night sweats, as it is a high-end mattress that ensures maximum comfort. And since no one replaces their mattress every year, it’s best to choose a model that offers excellent durability—another key strength of latex mattresses. So far, everything seems to indicate that this is one of the best options, but this type of mattress also has its drawbacks: what are they? Before answering that question, let’s review the general characteristics of the mattress and of latex.
Features and Benefits of Latex Mattresses
The latex mattress is the undisputed champion when it comes to elasticity, which allows it to easily conform to your body’s contours. It provides excellent support and features multiple comfort zones. Neither too soft nor too firm, the natural latex mattress offers the perfect balance for your comfort and well-being.
Latex mattresses are also known for their breathability, a characteristic they share with spring mattresses. This is due to their honeycomb structure, one of the key elements in keeping both the mattress and the person using it cool.
However, keep in mind that not all latex mattresses are the same. A mattress made with synthetic latex will not offer the same benefits as a 100% natural latex mattress. Of course, the price will also vary.
What do we mean by natural latex and synthetic latex?
Labels that say "100% latex," "100% natural latex, " or "100% natural latex" can be confusing to shoppers. It is essential to distinguish between the three types of latex, as the actual latex content varies depending on the label.
The term “100% natural latex” refers to mattresses that contain 85% natural latex (rubber). It’s important to check the actual amount of natural latex, since manufacturers sometimes add a percentage of synthetic latex (the maximum possible percentage of natural latex is 97%; the remaining 3% consists of vulcanizing agents, which are necessary to transform the latex from its liquid state into foam). It’s also important to check whether the mattress has EUROLATEX certification if you’re considering this type of latex mattress.
It is not easy to tell the difference between a synthetic latex mattress and a natural latex mattress at first glance. However, labels such as "100% latex" or "100% natural latex" indicate that the mattress is made of synthetic latex. This is usually the case when the percentage of natural latex is not specified.
Now that you can tell the three terms apart, we can move on to the most important points...
Features and Disadvantages of a 100% Natural Latex Mattress
A natural and healthy option for a good night’s sleep is a mattress made of 100% natural latex, featuring up to 7 comfort zones and a density of up to 95 kg/m³. This mattress is ideal for everyone and is particularly recommended for people with allergies, as well as for anyone suffering from back pain or who wants to enjoy excellent independent support.
The natural latex mattress’s breathability and water resistance are two of its major advantages. This makes it ideal for people who tend to sweat a lot at night or who suffer from night sweats. Its temperature-regulating properties allow you to enjoy a cool night in the summer and a warm night in the winter.
Made from the sap of the Hevea tree, or rubber tree, a 100% natural latex mattress is hypoallergenic, naturally dust-mite-resistant, and antibacterial. If you suffer from allergies, you should choose a mattress that contains as few chemicals as possible. In that case, a 100% natural latex mattress is perfect for you.
The high cost is the main drawback of 100% natural latex mattresses; even at a fair price, they tend to be somewhat more expensive. However, they have a lifespan of more than 12 years, so we can say that choosing this type of mattress would be a good investment.
What about a synthetic latex mattress?
A synthetic latex mattress offers some advantages similar to those of a natural latex mattress. Synthetic latex has good density, even though it is lower than that of natural latex. Its density can reach 60–70 kg/m³, so a synthetic latex mattress is preferable to a memory foam mattress in terms of comfort.
Unfortunately, although synthetic latex mattresses may be very comfortable, they are made from petrochemical-based materials. Because of its chemical composition and manufacturing process, synthetic latex cannot be considered a healthy material. This explains why it is much less expensive than a 100% natural latex mattress.
Summary of the Pros and Cons of Latex Mattresses
A natural latex mattress addresses all the points discussed. It provides comfortable support, regulates temperature to keep you cool, and helps prevent back pain and allergies. But all this comes at a price; the only drawback of this type of mattress might be its high cost.
The advantage is that, knowing that a latex mattress lasts more than 10 years (more than 12 for natural latex), we could easily overlook that minor drawback. As we mentioned earlier, you could opt for a synthetic latex mattress as a more affordable option. But since your health is priceless, it’s always best to choose a 100% natural latex mattress.
