"A recent study reveals that 80% of our indoor air is contaminated with toxic substances ."
So we might wonder about the furniture industry’s obsession with “well-being at home.” It promises beautiful, comfortable furniture that makes us feel good in our homes, yet it uses materials to manufacture that very furniture that are toxic to our health.
And it is in this context that brands like ours— Kipli—are emerging with solutions, seeking to produce differently to protect our health and our planet. So that you feel just as good inside your home as you do outside it.
The sofa market: a (highly) standardized sector
The Problem with So-Called “Standard” Sofa Beds
The first question is: What does “standardized sofa beds” mean? Well, these are the sofas most commonly found on the market: with sleeping surfaces and seats made from petrochemical-based foam (i.e., petroleum) and melamine-coated wood (i.e., plastic, covered in polyester—more plastic—and manufactured on the other side of the world). With such a wide price range, one might wonder about the quality behind these sofas, which sell for between €300 and €1,500.
When it comes to comfort, standard sofa beds aren't all that impressive either; they're designed to be a temporary solution, and often result in a rather unpleasant awakening due to the aches and pains they can cause during the night.
And that's where the whole problem lies
We accept this type of sofa bed as the norm, without knowing why, what its benefits are, or—much less—what the consequences might be.
In terms of durability, it is very poor, with the seat—as well as the additional cushions— sagging prematurely within the first few years of use, causing them to lose both their comfort and their aesthetic appeal.
When discussing the materials used in these synthetic sleeper sofas, terms like “polyester” or “polyurethane” are often mentioned. In fact, this means we spend a significant amount of time in our lives on products made from petroleum. It’s important to know this because these materials can release volatile organic compounds (VOCs) that are harmful to our health.
A sofa like this causes pollution throughout its entire life cycle. From the very beginning, it involves a long manufacturing and distribution chain because it’s made on the other side of the world under appalling working conditions. Then there are the VOCs it releases into our homes, and even more so afterward, since these sofas are rarely recycled and are simply (and unfortunately) landfilled.
A solution we all like.
In light of this, we wanted to redefine the standards of this industry by offering a responsible alternative that is just as comfortable. We had identified several criteria—and not just any criteria:
- First, a sleeper sofa that’s durable. In other words, a sofa that doesn’t sag after three years and retains its comfort and good looks long after that.
- To ensure that the time this sofa spends in your living room is a positive experience, it must be made of natural materials—free of chemical treatments and plastics.
- And the key point: we wanted this sofa to convert into a real bed for everyday use—one that isn’t a nightmare to unfold every time.
In keeping with our commitment to sustainability, it was unthinkable that our sofa would be manufactured on the other side of the world, like most others. To ensure responsible manufacturing, it had to be crafted as close to home as possible, by skilled workers who are fairly compensated.
Our goal: to offer you a natural alternative
The Choice of Materials and Their Benefits
To replace synthetic foams in most guest beds and sofa cushions, we’ve chosen natural latex, a highly breathable material that naturally offers antibacterial andanti-dust mite properties. Next, as you’ve surely noticed, we’ve chosen French linen to replace the usual polyester covers. It’s a durable, lightweight material that requires little water to produce. Linen is not chemically treated, so it is eco-friendly and healthy, with no impact on health or biodiversity. We’ve chosen linen grown near us in northern France by French weavers, Lemaitre Demeester, who have specialized in this craft since 1835.
And to support all this craftsmanship, we selected French beech wood to build the frame of our sofa.
The design of this sofa
With all these beautiful materials, we needed to combine techniques and craftsmanship to bring out the best in them. We decided to make our sofa fully removable and washable, so that little accidents would never be a reason to replace the entire sofa.
The latex seat is then supported by hand-assembled steel springs . To give the cushions more volume, the seat is also filled with recycled feathers and down.
Finally, we didn't want to take the sleeping area lightly, so we equipped our sofa with a genuine premium mattress, made of latex and designed using our expertise.
The desire for local, family-run production
As you can see, sustainability and responsibility were the guiding principles behind the design of this sofa. To ensure responsible manufacturing, we kept production close to home. Rather than outsourcing to Asia, we chose to work with a skilled, well-paid workforce whose well-being is our top priority.
For the mattress, we turned to our mattress manufacturer located in Italy, near Milan. They are one of three European workshops that specialize in the production of natural latex mattresses.
For the rest of our sofa, we chose a family-owned business. Founded in 1965, this family-owned business is now a leading name in French sofa manufacturing—specifically, linen sofas. For nearly 20 years, it has been committed to a sustainable “Made in France” approach, embodying excellence and precision in craftsmanship. Our sofas are hand-finished to ensure the highest quality. Driven by the same commitments as we are, they make sure every step of their production is carried out with full responsibility and sustainability in mind. And that’s why we love them 💚
