As environmental awareness becomes increasingly important, choosing sustainable and eco-friendly furniture is essential.
"According to a recent study, illegally harvested timber accounts for between 15% and 30% of the timber sold worldwide."
This is an alarming finding that prompts us to remain vigilant and continually improve our furniture manufacturing processes. And that’s exactly what we’ve done with our AVA collection—so let’s get started and take you behind the scenes!
The Need for High-Quality Furniture
The Problem with So-Called “Standard” Furniture
In the furniture market, most of the furniture you’ll find is often made from melamine-coated wood. But do you really know what that is, and how it might affect your health?
Melamine-faced wood is actually a panel made up of three layers. A resin is used to bond these layers together. It is a melamine resin, a type of molecule that can be transformed into plastic through a chemical reaction. It is applied to a panel made of small wood particles and a decorative sheet. When these three layers are combined, the result is a melamine-faced panel.
And that's exactly the problem.
First, from a health perspective, because this plastic resin releases what are known as VOCs (volatile organic compounds), which are toxic and even carcinogenic to us, and 80% of indoor air is exposed to these VOCs.
Next, from a purely functional standpoint. Laminate isn’t known for being durable—in fact, quite the opposite. It isn’t resistant to impacts, temperature changes, or environmental fluctuations. This makes it difficult to keep it in good condition if you move; otherwise, you’d have to upcycle it, but more often than not, these items are thrown away and not recycled.
And finally, from an environmental standpoint, it’s a bit of a disaster. To make melamine-faced wood, you have to use corrosive chemicals that harm the environment , as well as toxic adhesives that pollute your home.
A solution that everyone likes
In light of this, at Kipli we are committed to redefining industry standards with our sustainable solid wood furniture . Our goal was to offer you a responsible alternative, so we set out to create furniture that:
- First and foremost, they’re durable, so they’ll last for many years without breaking or getting damaged.
- And, of course, make sure they’re natural, so that your health is never affected by the furniture you love.
- And the key to it all is an elegant design, so you'll keep them for a long time without ever getting tired of them.
In keeping with this commitment to sustainability, it was inconceivable that our AVA collection would be produced on the other side of the world, as is the case with the vast majority of furniture. To ensure responsible manufacturing, it had to be crafted as close to home as possible, by skilled workers who are fairly compensated.
Our goal: to offer you a sustainable alternative with our AVA collection.
The Choice of Materials and Their Benefits
To meet all these objectives, we chose locally sourced solid wood as the primary material for AVA. Durable, strong, and natural, it met every requirement in our specifications.
We turned to French beech . To take our commitment even further, we chose a finish featuring a natural, water-based, VOC-free varnish to bring out the beautiful color of the beech, and for our darker model, we applied a naturally tinted oil.
The design of this furniture
To ensure our comfort, our furniture must be well-designed for everyday use. Whether it’s a dresser, a wardrobe, or even a shelf, this collection has been designed to meet your needs in a practical way. It features ample storage space, is often modular, and, of course, is built to last.
Overall, we’ve paid close attention to all the little details that make your experience as simple and enjoyable as possible—from the quality of the hardware we use to the hidden fasteners and the ease with which our furniture can be assembled and disassembled.
And finally, because having high-quality furniture is an integral part of well-being, we wanted this collection to be as accessible as possible, so we decided to offer it as a flat-pack kit to save on storage costs and thus offer a more affordable price!
Locally made
When it comes to production, we chose the AVA region, where Mathieu and his fellow artisans have been carrying on a shared passion for three generations: working with beech wood.
In their workshop, they preserve and showcase this precious wood through local, sustainable, and entirely French production.
Their exceptional expertise allows them to create durable and eco-friendly furniture. They even go so far as to recycle wood scraps and sawdust to heat their workspace. Their ingenuity knows no bounds, and that’s why we love them. 💚
