How to Choose a Bed: Factors to Consider

Some studies suggest that we spend an average of 25 years in bed. Given this fact, having good bedding is essential. However, given the wide variety of bed models currently available on the market, it’s not always easy to know which ones to choose. Dimensions, height, materials, and finishes are all factors to consider before making your final selection. Of course, comfort, durability, and practicality are also key features to evaluate.

So, what kind of bed should you choose? Here are the factors to consider when selecting the perfect bed for a good night’s sleep, sleeping in, and afternoon naps.

The size of the bed

Before investing in a new bed, it’s important to consider which bed size will be best for you. After all, both your comfort and the quality of your sleep depend on the size of the bed. It’s what determines the sleeping positions you’ll be able to adopt—or not. When choosing the length of your bed, take your height into account; based on your measurements, it’s recommended to add an extra 15 cm to ensure you have enough space.

Dimensions of the children's bed

Generally, single beds for children have standard dimensions of 90x190 cm. However, in addition to the size of the bed itself, you should also check the available space to ensure the bed is functional. In this case, if the bedroom is small, you might want to consider a combination bed, which also includes a desk and storage shelves.

Beds with drawers are ideal for maximizing space and providing extra storage. Finally, if several of your children sleep in the same room, a bunk bed is the perfect solution for small spaces.

Dimensions of a single bed for adults

As for single beds for adults, they come in two different sizes:

  • 120x190 cm, or a one-and-a-half bed;
  • 90x200 cm, which is slightly larger than the standard size.

This type of bed is therefore larger than children’s beds. They are ideal for teenagers or young adults who do not have a bedroom spacious enough to accommodate a double bed. With these models, the sleeper enjoys greater comfort in a limited sleeping space.

Dimensions of the double bed

Double beds also come in different sizes. They are generally available in three distinct sizes:

  • 140x190 cm, which is the standard size for a double bed;
  • 160x200 cm, which is the queen size and offers greater comfort to sleepers;
  • 200x200 cm, which is equivalent to a king-size bed and offers optimal comfort, as two people can sleep on it without getting in each other's way.

Your choice will therefore depend on your comfort preferences, but it will also depend on your space constraints. A 140x190 cm bed inevitably takes up less space than a 200x200 cm bed. Depending on the space available in your bedroom, you can then choose the model that best suits your needs.

The height of the sleeping surface

The height of the sleeping surface is another factor to consider when choosing a bed, not to mention that it also affects your comfort and depends on your height. If you’re short, a low bed might be right for you. You won’t have any trouble getting out of bed. If you’re on the taller side, it’s best to choose a bed with a more suitable height.

As a general rule, make sure that the soles of your feet touch the floor when you’re sitting on the edge of the bed. Your knees should be aligned with your feet, and you should be able to stand up effortlessly.

The optimal height of a bed is often between 50 and 55 centimeters (including the bed frame, box spring, and mattress). At this height, you can lie down comfortably, and your mattress will be optimally ventilated. Note that your choice of mattress also depends on the height of your bed. Specifically, if you want to invest in a thick mattress, you need to make sure your bed frame is deep enough. If the dimensions of the mattress you’ve chosen don’t match the height of your bed frame, then your mattress won’t sit properly. It may shift when you’re lying on it. Conversely, if it’s too thick, it might not fit inside your bed frame.

Materials and Finish

The choice of materials is also important, as they determine the sturdiness and design of your bed. Think of your purchase as an investment that will ensure you get a good night’s sleep and relaxation. It should be comfortable, but also durable.

For this reason, a wooden bed remains a safe bet. If you appreciate elegance and authenticity, a solid wood bed (solid beech, poplar, etc.) is perfect for you. It adds natural charm and style to the bedroom. If you could also opt for FSC-certified wood, you’d be sure that the production process adheres to sustainable forest management practices. You’ll sleep in a bed that’s comfortable, durable, and eco-friendly. For a more baroque look, wrought-iron beds are also very popular. These models are often sturdy and, thanks to their durability, are the best choice for people who move frequently.

When it comes to design, it all depends on your personal taste. After all, the bed should also enhance the look of your bedroom. The good news is that there’s now a wide variety of beds available, ranging from modern and designer styles to classic and even Scandinavian designs. Keep in mind, however, that when it comes to materials—and to ensure a restful night’s sleep—it’s best to opt for natural materials.

The type of bed

Also consider what kind of bed you’d like to sleep in. Once again, there are several types of adult beds available, and the choice depends on your needs and preferences. Choose a model that meets your expectations in terms of comfort, design, and durability.

Of course, there’s the classic adult bed, with or without a headboard. Currently on the market, low beds—inspired by Japanese culture and well-suited to bedrooms with a modern, minimalist style—are the most common. In fact, it’s common to have a separate headboard in this case. In addition to the classic bed, there are also other models that are more practical and sometimes take up less space. This is the case with the storage bed, for example, which offers extra storage space under the box spring. You can store all your belongings there: pillows, comforters, sheets, and throws. You’re guaranteed to save space, and you won’t clutter up your dressers or closets.

The available space in the room

Last but not least, the choice of your standard bed. This depends on the available space in your bedroom. If your bedroom is large, you can opt for a king-size bed and enjoy a comfortable night’s sleep. Conversely, in a smaller bedroom, it’s best to go with a standard-size bed—and why not choose a model with built-in storage? That way, you won’t need to add any extra storage furniture. Now you know what criteria to use when choosing your storage bed. As for the rest, have fun selecting colors and materials so you end up with a piece of furniture that blends seamlessly into the room.
